Black Knights win 1st district SENS By CHRIS BELL Sports Correspondent LEHMAN - By virtue of their first District 2 championship, the Lake-Lehman High School foot- ball team will achieve another milestone when they play their first PIAA state playoff game at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium, Friday at 7 p.m. The Black Knights will try to accomplish what no other team has been able to this season — beat South Williamsport. The Mounties, the District 4 champi- ons, enter the game at 12-0, com- ing off an impressive win over perennial power Mt. Carmel. Although his team ig sailing in uncharted waters, Lehman head coach Rich Gorgone doesn’t think his team is in over its head. “I'm really happy for our kids,” said Gorgone. “We're excited to be among the final eight teams in the state. We've gotten to this point because of the pure desire of this team. With this crew, who knows how far we can go. We're enjoying it and are going to take it one play at a time.” With just a few days between games and even less daylight, Gorgone doesn’t plan any radical changes for this week's game. “We won't do anything different in our game preparation,” he explained. “We exchanged some game films and we'll study the film and come up with a game plan as usual.” “We don’t have enough time to put in a whole new package,” Gorgone continued. “We're sound on both sides of the ball. We'll continue to do the things that It will come down to execution.” As for South Williamsport, Gorgoneis trying to learn as much Sues oft the ball. as possible. “From what I've seen, they appear to have a balanced attack on offense and a very ag- gressive defense.” The Mounties’ undefeated slate doesn’t concern Gorgone. “At this point, everybody is good,” he ex- plained. “There won't be any easy games the rest of the way.” While Lehman's 8-4 record isn’t as impressive, Gorgone believes the regular season helped his squad prepare for this contest. “The Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 is brutal,” said Gorgone. “The fact that we survived the rest of our league is a credit to our team. Look at our losses, they are all to playoff teams.” For the Knights to be success- ful this week, they must put forth the total team effort they have exhibited throughout the season, especially in Saturday’s come- from-behind victory at Montrose “This team jist doesn't quit,” said Gorgone. “We fell'behind 14- 0 in the snow and the mud at Montrose and we could have packed itin. But, we kept working and were able to pull it out.” When Montrose jumped out to an early lead, Gorgone and his coaching staff joked on the side- lines that they had the Meteors right where they wanted them.
