6 - The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, September 10, 1997 State offers forgiveness of agriculture education loans The Pennsylvania Higher Edu- cation Assistance Agency (PHEAA) has recently announced that ap- plications are now available for the Agriculture Education Loan Forgiveness Program, according to Sénator Charles Lemmond (R- 20). Lemmond explained that stu- dents who have borrowed money from PHEAA to pursue a degree in agriculture or veterinary medi- cine may be eligible for a loan forgiveness program established by the Commonwealth. PHEAA established this program to en- courage individuals with degrees in agriculture and veterinary sci- ence to return to a family farm in Pennsylvania or to devote all or a portion of their veterinary prac- tice to farm animals. The program will repay up to $2,000 per year of PHEAA-guar- anteed student loans for each year the borrower is employed full-time in agricultural-related field. Bor- rowers: are limited to a lifetime maximum of $10,000. Lemmond said to be eligible for the .program, a borrower must remain in Pennsylvania after graduation and be employed full time in the operation of a family farm, a family corporation or prac- tice veterinary medicine. Family farms and farm corporations must also be used for the production of agricultural products for commer- cial purposes and devote 75 per- cent or more of its assets to the business of agriculture. Veterinarians must be certified by the U.S. Department of Agri- culture to sign health certificates required for the interstate com- merce of agricultural animals and animal products. Veterinarians must also be able to certify regu- latory testing. Applicants must have a degree related to agriculture or veteri- nary medicine from a Pennsylva- nia school or college. Applicants must also be in their first year of full-time employment in the field on or after July 1, 1991. Only those loans guaranteed by PHEAA are eligible.
