For more information, call Mounts avenge loss that opened '96 campaign By RONALD BARTIZEK Post Staff BACK MOUNTAIN - Stung by last season’s 39-19 opening-game loss to Marian Catholic, the Dal- las Mountaineers weren't about to let the Pottsville squad get out of the Back Mountain on the win side. But it wasn’t easy. The Dallas trademark defense seemed to be absent in the first half as Marian took a 16-13 lead on the arm of quarterback Brent Andrew. To add insult to injury, the Colts punched in a two-point conversion on each of their touch- downs, while the Mountaineers were stopped on an extra point attempt. But the second half looked nothing like the first, as a fired-up Dallas defense stopped Andrew and his teammates cold, and Mountaineer quarterback Bill Piasta, who didn’t complete a pass in six attempts, scored the win- ning touchdown from the 1-yard line. Piasta had scored the first Dallas touchdown on a 7-yard run in the opening period. Dennis Wengrzynek put the Mounts ahead in the second pe- riod when he picked up a punt that had been blocked by Frank Lehman drops home opener, pg 10 Perkoski and ran it in for the score. But Marian came back on a 69-yard pass play to take the half- time lead. While the Dallas passing game was ineffective, the Mounts piled up 252 yards on the ground, led by Eric White's 95 yards on 22 carries. He was followed by Paul Onzik with 69 yards on seven carries, Matt Jackson with 37 yards in 13 tries and Piasta with 36 yards on eight carries includ- ing the two touchdowns. Marian won the overall yard- age contest with a total of 312 yards, but gained only 174 on the ground. Dallas had 17 first downs to the Colts’ 12, and lost only one of five fumbles while recovering two of Marian’s four drops. In a rematch that could have turned ugly after last year’s meet- ing in Pottsville was marred by shouts and fighting, only 12 pen- alties were called, five on the Mounts. Dallas will host Meyers Satur- dayat 1 p.m. in theleague opener. Meyers lost to West Scranton 28- 12 last weekend. : U-11 girls finish 2-1-1 at Pocono Cup The Northeast Travel U-11 Girl's Select soccer team, made up of players from different teams in the area, went to the Pocono Cup in July. JUNIOR FOOTBALL Raiders A tops Edwardsville Raiders A-Team used a balance offensive attack on its way to an exciting 27-20 victory over the Edwardsville Eagles. QB Justin Sayre’s first three touchdowns on the afternoon was set up by two key pass completions to Steven Salavantis and Jonathan Nutche. Bobby Hivish kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead. After the Eagles narrowed the margin to 7-6 with a TD of their own, Salavantis hit paydirt for the Raiders with a nifty 15-yard scamper on a pass completion. Sayre added the two point conversion. Again the Eagles responded with a TD of their own making the score 15-12 at halftime. Behind some powerful running by fullback Bobby Zaruta and the blocking up front by Mike Burns, Nick Mathewson, Doug Zaruta, Marty Murray and Billy Youells on the offensive line, the Raiders increased their margin to 27-12 with Sayre scoring two second half touchdowns. Following the last Raider’s score the Eagles returned the kick-off for a touchdown and added the two point conversion for a 27-20 game. The Eagles recovered a Raider fumble on the next possession and started to drive for the winning score late in the game when linebacker Bobby Zaruta snagged an interception to seal the victory.
