8 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA -. Wednesday, August 20, 1997 - Fe I SE Strike up the band for a "Band Camp' is NOW 1S Session By MICHAEL TWICHELL Post Correspondent DALLAS-With the begin- ning of their 1997 “band camp” last week, the Dallas High School marching band officially started preparing for the long competition season ahead. With many talented players returning to the program, expectations are running high. “This will be one of our most successful seasons due to the large number of upperclassmen we have this year,” predicted acting band director Jerry Baldauff. (Long time director Todd Hunter is away on sabbatical through January.) This year’s show, “School Days,” will take audiences through the various phases of a typical school year. “The instructional staff spent many months putting together the musical and visual aspects of this program,” said Baldauff. Songs include “Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Sum- mer,” “School Days,” “Notre Dame Fight Song,” “Me and Julio Down by the School Yard,” “Pomp and Circum- stance,” and “School's Out.” “This show should appeal to audiences because everyone, young and old, has memories of their school days,” said Baldauff. The show marks a depar- ture from the highly success- instruments tune up for the new season. ful jazz/big-band style shows Dallas has presented in the last few years, broadening the repertoire to include both rock and classical pieces. The band will also use various props and costume changes to depict the show’s theme. According to Baldauff, “It's very important to visually enhance the music for audience appeal. Our goal is to entertain through music with some theatrical touches.” The first public perfor- mance of the 1997 Dallas High School marching band will be on August 30 at the season opening Dallas/ Marion-Catholic football game at home.
