ALFRED MAHLER Alfred Mahler, 70, of Dallas, died Aug. 17, 1997, in the Hos- pice Community Care Inpatient Unit at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes- Barre. Born Sept. 13, 1926, in Plains Township, he was the son of the late Alfred A. and Anna Kishbaugh Mahler. He graduated from Dallas High School. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard in North Africa during World War II. Prior to his retirement, he lived in Hartford, CT, and employed as a security guard by Etna Life and Casualty Co. in Connecticut. He attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Shavertown, Kingston Township. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Jean, and several brothers and sisters. Surviving are daughters, Mrs. George (Roberta Lee) Small, Swoyersville; Mrs. Anthony (Deborah Jean) Lugo, Hartford, CT; sons, Alfred Arthur, Marlborough, CT; Ronald, Exeter; nine grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; brothers, Paul and Charles, both of Dallas; a sister, Grace Lyon, MA; and several nieces and nephews. Shook, 72, of Noxen, died Aug. 17, 1997, at Wilkes- Barre General Hospital. Born February 4, 1925, in Stull, he was the son of the late Gordon and Florence Blythe Shook. He was a life resident of Noxen. He served with the U.S. Ma- rines during World War II. He was employed as a butcher by his father. Later, he became a meat cutter for Bonnices Market, Forty Fort, and Ray Daring’s Mar- ket, Dallas. He also was the kitchen steward at the State Cor- rectional Institute at Dallas for 22 years until his retirment 12 years ago. He was a member of Noxen United Methodist Church and Noxen Sportsman's Club. He served as an officer for Orcutt's Grove Cemetery Association and Noxen Credit Union. He and his wife, the former Betty Klopko, celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary on June 4, 1997. Surviving in addition to his wife, are sons, Terry A., Carl F., and Kurt G. Shook, all of Noxen; a brother, Fred Shook, Lancaster, CA; a sister, Evelyn Mansfield, Lewiston, ID; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
