The contest ended after five in- nings due to the 10-run rule, with the final score 29-2 in favor of the Back Mountain. The game began with the Back Mt. All-Stars scoring 14 runs in the first inning. Nineteen batters approached the plate as run upon run was scored. Amanda Stolarick’s single drove in the first two runs of the game. SOFTBALL, pg. 10 Softball stars topple Plains on road to finals The Back Mountain Major League Softball All-Stars ad- vanced to the finals of the win- ners’ bracket of the District 16 Tournament with three victories last week. The team started with a 22-6 win over Plains. Four pitchers, Rachel Kukosky, Molly Guntli, Lisa Wasser and Carla Chiampi combined on a one-hit- ter over four innings. Hitting stars were Rachel Kukosky with a home run, and Carla Chiampi, Sammy Oschman and Jaime Sickler with two hits each. On Thursday, the All-Stars traveled to Mountaintop where they won again in four innings by a score of 14-4. Rachel Kukosky pitched a strong game for three and two third innings and Lisa Wasser finished the pitching for BMT. Mountaintop was not able to get a hit off of the two pitchers. Hitting for BMT was led by Lisa Katie Austin will attend top basketball camp Dallas Junior, Katie Austin will attend the Blue Star Invitational Basketball Camp at Lehigh Uni- versity July 11-14. Blue Star is known for having the best female high school athletes in the coun- try experience top competition. Last year, over 1,500 players from 42 states and seven foreign coun- tries competed before 600 differ- ent college and university coaches from 50 schools. Wasser with two hits, including a double, and Sam Lloyd with two hits. Sammy Oschman had a big first inning single and three RBIs and Molly Guntli had a single and two RBIs. On Saturday the All-Stars beat Jenkins Township by a score of 11-1, again in four innings. Carla Chiampi and Molly Guntli were the pitchers, combining for a no- hitter. Lisa Wasser led the 10 hit attack with two hits and three RBIs. Molly Guntli had a home run and three RBIs and Sam Lloyd had two hits. Rachel Kukosky, Lauren Patton, Carla Chiampi, Jaime Sickler and Meredith Lacey all had singles. The All-Stars are playing great defense behind strong pitching and all 14 girls have contributed to the wins. BMT played at Nanticoke on Tuesday in a battle of undefeated teams. McCue put National up 4-3 with a two-run homer in the second before Tyler Droppers fol- lowed with one of his own to in- crease the lead to 5-3. Hanover responded with five more in the top of the third before Back Moun- tain came back with five more in the bottom of the inning to end the scoring at 10-8. Jordan Koslosky picked up the win after three innings worked giving up a run and fanning three. Harveys Lake 11- Ashley/Newton 1 Dustin Kapson hurled a three hitter and fanned nine to lead Harveys Lake to victory July 2. Leading hitters were Ryan Besteder and Matt Ide who each had a single and triple. Jesse Turner and Willie Weber had doubles. Back Mt. Nat. 5, Heights 2 Joel Lesinski's arm was on fire as he struck out 14 and gave up just two hits in Back Mountain's 5-2 victory over Heights in Wilkes- Barre July 2. Angelo Georgetti belted a double to keep National alive in losers bracket action. Duryea 16 - Harveys Lake 6 Duryea unleashed a 21 hit at- tack to eliminate Harveys Lake July 7. Phil Kasper led Harveys Lake with three hits including a double. Matt Stuart ripped a 3- run pinch hit homer. Ryan Besteder, Greg Kostrobala and Willie Weber all added singles. LITTLE LEAGUE SOFTBALL Jenkins Twp. 12, Bob Horlacher 11 Horlacher held on to a 11-8 lead going into the bottom of the sixth before Jenkins Twp. twisted their fate with four runs of their own to take a 12-11 victory and drop Horlacher to the losers bracket July 3. Tiffany Hettes scat- tered two hits for Horlacher fol- lowed by Susan Barber and Traci Zacharias with one apiece. Harveys Lake 13, Avoca/Dupont 3 Lindsey Walkowiak hurled a two hit masterpiece striking out ten in Harveys Lake's 13-3 victory over Avoca July 3. Walkowiak also conducted a seminar at the plate with a perfect 4-for-4 performance. Megan Thorne went 3-for-4 and Susan Barber 2-for-3 each with a double. Bob Horlacher 17, Plains 4 Horlacher belted nine runs in the top of the fourth and held on to take a 17-4 victory from Plains July 5 in Beaumont. Julie Wetherbee was credited with the win after giving up only five hits in a game shortened by the ten-run rule. Tiffany Hettes and Cassie Mishanski each belted doubles and Traci Zacharias pumped two singles. The win keeps Horlacher alive in losers bracket action. Northwest 18, Harveys Lake 2 Harveys Lake was eliminated from further action after a trip to Northwest July 5 as Northwest battered Harveys Lake 18-2. Harveys Lake only managed one hit, a single by Jennifer Starosta. Susan Barber was tagged with the loss. SENIOR LEAGUE BASEBALL Back Mt. 23, Pittston Twp. 3 Ryan Sorber struck out five over three innings and Back Mountain played errorless ball to advance to the winner bracket finals in Senior League action July 7. Mike Faneck and Chuck White- head paced the 21 hit attack. Faneck added four singles and Whitehead added a home run, triple and double. Josh Katyl, Jesse Stolarcyk and Danny Fauerback all had two hits in- cluding doubles. Matt Wycallis and Mike Sabol added two hits including triples. J.T. Wisnieski and Josh Lesinski added doubles. SENIOR LEAGUE SOFTBALL Bob Horlacher 19, Mountaintop 13 Horlacher pitcher Newberry blanked eight and went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead Horlacher to a wild 19-13 District 16 victory July 3 at Beaumont. Stephanie Case also went 4-for-5 in the victory. Laura Maslowski and Lindsay Faux added three hits apiece. Northwest 27, Harveys Lake 5 Northwest never looked back from an 1l-run first inning to massacre Harveys Lake 27-5 July 3 in Shickshinny. Melissa Sutliff dropped two singles. Kelly Wagner was credited with the loss. Bob Horlacher 17, Harveys Lake 2 Horlacher’'s defense held Harveys Lake silent allowing their hosts to just two hits as Horlacher flattened Harveys Lake 17-2 July 5 at the Lake. Stephanie Case picked up the win. Nicole Parsons smaked a double and Jessie Keefe stretched a triple. Horlacher ad- vances while Harveys Lake is elimi- nated from further action. Pirates wear Sr. League crown Back Mt. Pirates 8 - Back Mt. Blue Jays 7 The Pirates scored two runs in the last frame to pull out a thrill- ing victory. Josh Lesinski led the Pirate hitters with two hits in- cluding a double. Ryan Sorber and Josh Katyl added two hits apiece. Matt Loftus doubled for the Blue Jays. Josh Katyl and Matt Wycallis combined for 10 strikeouts with Wycallis getting the win. Mike Fanneck pitched well in a losing effort striking out six Pirates. BMT Pirates 13 - Pittston 0 Matt Wycallis, Ryan Sorber and Adam Clay combined, throwing a three hitter, striking out seven Pittston batters. Josh Katyl led Pirate hitters with three hits in- cluding a triple and double.
