All new band parents are encouraged to attend and become involved in the orga- nization to support our band through another successful sea- son. The picnic will be held on the high school grounds in Lehman. Newly elected officers for the 1997- 98 school year are: president Chuck Boytin, vice president Scott Wentzel, secretary, Faith Roberts, treasurer, Jane Shoemaker and corresponding secretary, Ruth Wolfe. Students honored for Latin exam at Sem. Lower School students at Wyo- ming Seminary were recognized for their outstanding performance on the National Latin Exam. Receiving the highest-level hon- ors, Summa Cum Laude (gold) were: Emily Foran, Dallas; Timo- thy Polin, Shavertown; Benjamin Rogers, Trucksville. Those receiving Maxima Cum Laude awards (silver) were An- drew Feinstein, Shavertown; Neil Shah, Shavertown and Puja Talati, Dallas. Boston University awarded academic degrees to 4,103 students this -spring. Among the graduates was Shavertown resident David J. -Weader, who received a JD in Law. Students visit New York Police Academy Recently the Law Enforcement/Police Science Class at West Side Area Vocational-Technical School were guests at the New York City Police Academy. While there, the students were-given a tour and demonstration of the various types of training a cadet in their academy goes through prior to becoming a policeman/woman in New York City. In addition, the students were given an opportunmity to participate in some hands on training in shoot, don’t shoot situations and tour the stable area, which houses the New York City Police Mounted Unit. Lisa Anne Tomaine receives award Lisa Anne Tomaine has been named to the College of Arts and Sciences Dean's List for the spring semester from the University of Scranton. Lisa finished her first year at the University with a perfect 4.0 average. She is majoring in Bio Chemistry. Lisa was also awarded. the Chemical Rubber Company (CTC) Award for excellence in freshman chemistry. Each year the chemistry department recognizes excellence among freshman majors by naming a recipient of this award. Lisa is a graduate of Dallas High School and was named Valedicto- rian of the 1996 class. She resides in Shavertown with her parents John and Arlene Tomaine. Camp will attend Cornell Univ. in fall Adrienne E. Camp, a recent graduate of Dallas High School has decided to attend Cornell University next fall where she will pursue a bi- ology pre-med program and also compete in Divison I soccer. Camp, chose Cornell because of its excellent academic repu- tation. Camp was one of two soccer players from NE Pennsylvania to be selected to the Pennsylvania All-State Soccer Team. As a captain of both Dallas High School's girls soccer and basket- ball teams, she was selected to the Wyoming Valley Conference First Team All-Stars in both sports, and selected as “player of the year”. Adrienne lettered for four years in both soccer and bas- ketball, and was the Dallas-MVP in both sports. ADRIENNE CAMP As an Ivy League university, Cornell competes with major col-~ leges and universities in the North- eastern U.S. Randy May, the Big Red's women’s soccer coach, helped persuade Camp to attend the New York school. In addition to its excellent academic reputa- tion, May indicated that Cornell has been one of the top ranked women's soccer teams, finishing six times in the top 20 and he looks forward to Adrienne’s con- tribution to the team. Camp, a member of the Na- tional Honor Society, was in the top five percent of her class, with a 3.5 GPA. : She was elected to the Stu- dent Government; played basket- ball for the Lady Pace Setter Athletic Club; the Dragon Soccer Travel Team; and volunteered for church and community programs. Camp was the recipient of numer- ous academic and athleticawards including the National Council of Youth Salute and the PIAA scholar-athlete awards. Students place in top 10 of nation Dallas High School students, Amanda and Kathryn Palmatier and their teacher Maryann Storz, recently returned from the Na- tional History Day Competition that was held at the University of Maryland where they represented the state of Pennsylvania. Their project, Purple Triangles: A Test of Faith, which traced the persecution of the Jehovah Wit- nesses in Nazi Concentration camps. made the runoffs which spotlighted the top 10 entries in each division. In final competi- tion they were ranked ninth in the Nation. Students from all 50 states emerged on Washington D.C. to compete for scholarships and awards in historical categories. Amanda and Kathryn spent their time meeting students from across the country, exchanging state pins and discussing the events. While visiting the Holocaust Museum, they were honored by having their project research and pictures accepted into the museum's archives. The entire trip was a highlight to many months of grueling work and serious competition. All agreed it was a rewarding academic experience that they would gladly do over again.
