Ph hi ) TERE 1 mt & DT ————— The Dallas Post Section 2 Wednesday, June 18, 1997 S 3 orts\Veek Back Mountain stars lead West in Kiwanis game By CHRIS BELL Post Correspondent DALLAS - The best senior soft- ball players in the Wyoming Val- ley Conference will play the final game of their high school careers at the 18th Annual Dallas Kiwanis All-Star Game at the Back Moun- tain Little League Field, Mon., June 23 at 5:30 p.m. The game features the league's best seniors in an East vs. West format and will be nine innings to allow each player sufficient play- ing time. Two Back Mountain residents will serve on the coaching staff of the West squad which is high- lighted by six players from Dallas and Lake-Lehman. Lehman head coach Bob Gray was selected to guide the West team while Wyoming Valley West head coach Cindy Slocum will serve as an assistant. Five Dallas players were named to the team; Sandy McCloud, Sa- rah Barlow, Melanie Getz, MaryAnn Selenski and Jamie Krause. Kim Spencer, the lone senior on Lehman’s team this year, was also chosen to participate. Gray, who earned the head coaching duties by virtue of Lehman's outstanding record, is excited about the opportunity. “It’s an honor to be chosen as head coach,” he explained. “First of all, it means your team had a good Irem Women's Tournament A Member-Member Tourna- ment was recently held at Irem Temple Country Club with the following winners:mlst place: Betsy Thomas, Nancy McAndrew, Joyce Shaw, None Libenson. 2nd place: Anne Nicholson, Sun Hee Koo, Joan Moran, Kate Ichter. 3rd place: Jane Kopp, Young Chang, Jane Boltz, Esther Saba. Williams/Harter and Blaums win on water Cumulus clouds and blue skies greeted 12 sailors at the weekly Harveys Lake Yacht Club Regatta. An Olympic course was sailed with light variable winds and occa- sional gusts to 10 knots. The race took two hours to complete with all boats finishing within five min- utes of each other. The Comet Class Race was won by Joan Williams and crew, Jane Harter. Second place was Dr. Lane Giddings and Dr. Fred Shaefer. Third place went to Dr. Henry Steuben and Jennifer Steuben as crew. Dr. John Alaimo and Sam also sailed. The weekly Handicap Race was won by Rep. Kevin Blaum with Beth Blaum, crew. Second place went to Bob Hall and Barbara Aston. Third place was taken by Joan Williams and Jane Harter. Drs. Giddings, Alaimo and Steuben with crews also sailed. Consideration by motorboaters was appreciated by the race par- ticipants during the entire race. The race chairman was Frank Wadas. Commodore David Delaney was time keeper asisted by David Delaney, Jr. Kelly will make a stop in Shavertown Lake-Lehman graduate Brian Kelly, a starting midfielder for the N Yof NJ MetroStars, will sign autograpsh at the Shaver- town McDon- ald'sTues.,June 24 from 5-7 p.m. Kelly was the club's first- round draft choice before he graduated from Duke University in the spring. While at Lehman, Kelly was voted the 1992 Parade magazine High School Player of the Year after leading his team to the state semi-finals. year. It's also a chance to coach some of the best players in the league. I'm really looking forward toit.” Gray has set three goals for the game. “I'm going to showcase the talent of the players, get every- body in the game and then try to win.” Slocum recently completed her third season at Wyoming Valley West where she led the Spartans to their first playoff berth in 13 years. A former standout player at Lake-Lehman, she played in the Kiwanis game in 1986. “I think it is a great honor for me to coach in this game and I'm really looking forward to it,” said Slocum. “I know a lot of these kids from various softball camps, but I only know most them as opponents. This game provides a great opportunity to get to meet some of your rivals.” Unfortunately for Slocum, her Valley West team won't be repre- sented at the game since the trio of players which were picked will be away at Senior Week festivi- ties. “That's disappointing, but they had made plans for this a long time ago,” said Slocum. “I'm just thrilled to be a part of this game. Softball in this area has really come a long way and this game is a great way to prove that.” For Lehman’s Spencer, the Kiwanis game is a time to have fun and look to the future. “My _ sister played in the game and had a lot of fun,” she explained. “I'm anxious to see how much fun it is.” ‘I'm happy that my career is over,” said Spencer, who will at- tend the University of Rhode Is- land in the fall. “I'm not really sad because I have four more years of ball to play in college.” Actually, Spencer is happiest about the fact that her pitching career is over. She is expected to be a catcher in college. “This is my last time pitching and I'm ex- cited about that,” she explained. “I had to work to hard at pitch- ing.” For Dallas shortstop Melanie Getz, the game is a sign of time flying by. “I can remember when Iwas a freshman and how I looked up to the seniors,” she said. “I made it a goal of mine to play in this game and it is very special to me. | can’t believe that four years have gone by already.” Getz, who will attend Juniata College, is looking forward to play- ing one last game with her Dallas teammates as well as playing with some of the league’s best players. “It is great to be with some of my teammates,” said Getz. “I've played with some of the other players on some travel teams and I'm looking forward to playing with them again. I can’t wait for the game.” McCloud, the Dallas pitcher who will attend Mansfield Univer- sity, is also excited about the game. “I've missed playing since our season ended,” she explained. “I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. It will be fun to meet the players from the other teams.” “It's special to me to have so many of my Dallas teammates playing in the game and for us to be able to play our last game on our field,” said McCloud. “I'm really looking forward to playing.” ORIOLES VS. The American and National League championships were played Tuesday night, too late for this issue. The championship game will be played Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Major League Softball playoffs will begin June 22, with games at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. The title game will be played June 26 at 7:45 p.m. AAA Baseball playoffs will take place June 23-25, with the title game June 26 at 5:30 p.m. : All games are held at the W.W. Kubis Memorial Field on Church St. BMT BASEBALL MAJORS - BASEBALL Phillies 15, Reds 4 The Phillies finished the regu- lar season unbeaten in first place in the National Division. Winning pitcher for the Phillies was Mark Kapitula. Phillip Pineo had two singles while teammate Joel Leshinski hit a single and a grand slam for the Phillies. Mike En- glish had two hits for the Reds. The Reds finished the season with 8 wins and 11 losses to get the fourth place playoff position. Orioles 13, Yankees 3 Jeff Rothstein and Ryan Gryskevicz combined to pitch a 2 hitter with 10 strike outs for the Orioles. Gryskevicz went 3 for 4 with a double while Rothstein was 2 for 4 with two doubles. Other Orioles with hits were Bob Murphy going 2 for 5 and Bill Youlls hit- ting a double. Nate Yoh and John Mank had doubles for the Yan- kees. Reds 3, Cards 5 Mark Yankowski was the win- ning pitcher for the Cards. Greg Mascioli had two hits in the game while Ryan Kellagher, Brian Cornia and Josh Halbing hit doubles for the Cards. MAJORS - SOFTBALL White Sox 15, A’s 2 White Sox clinched first place with this victory behind the no-hit pitching of Molly Guntli. Guntli fanned 10 A’s in six innings. Sam Lloyd had a single and home run for the White Sox. Korey and Lauren Patton scored the runs for the A's. White Sox 4, Cardinals 1 The White Sox completed the regular season undefeated in league play after Lisa Wasser pitched a no-hitter with 9 strike outs. Sam Oschman and Sam Lloyd had two hits for the White Sox. Allyse Toddei pitched for the Cardinals holding the opponents to 4 runs. AAA - BASEBALL Red Sox 13, Tigers 11 Red Sox 8, Dodgers 11 HARVEYS LAKE LITTLELEAGUE Mets 12 - B.H. Royals 0 Dustin Kapson fanned 17 and issued zero walks while no-hitting the previously undefeated Royals. Phil Kasper paced the Mets with a double, 2 triples and a home run. Garrett Engle had two hits and Kapson added a home run. Mets 10 - B.H. Angels 3 Garrett Engle pitched a 4-hitter and struck out 12. Eric Chimock and Engle had 2 hits while Dustin Kapson ripped a pair of doubles. Harvad paced the Angels with a single and triple. Halowich going to Shippensburg Joe Halowich has recently been recruited by and will attend Shippensburg University. Shippensburg head coach Bruce Peddie said “Joe runs faster than anyone we currently have. Because of his speed he could contribute right away at least on a part time basis.” Joe has a 6.7 time in the 60. Academically Joe is in the top 10 of a class of 140 and has a 3.7 cumulative grade point average. Joe is looking forward to playing for coach Peddie. “I hope to help the team win a conference champion- ship and return to the College World Series as they did in 1996,” he said.” Shippensburg competes in the PSAC and is Division II. Lake-Lehman coach Chip Sorber said, “Joe is a quality baseball player, more important a quality person. He will do well wherever he goes; speed does not go into a slump”. Joe was co-captain of the Lake- Lehman baseball team and has helped lead them to conference championships in 1996 and 1997. Dustin Kapson led the attack with 3 hits including 2 doubles. Matt Ide and Kasper had 2 hits and Eric Chimock had a double. Defensively, the Mets had 2 double plays. Matt Stuart and Jack Cobleigh each had a single and double for the Pirates. Clemm helps team to title Susquehanna University junior Ryan Clemm of Dallas was sixth in the long jump as he helped the homestanding Crusaders win the men’s team cham- pionship at the recent Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Under 19th year head coach Jim Taylor, the Crusader men won the team title for the third time in four seasons. A business adminsitration major, Clemm is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Clemm of Dallas.
