6 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA . Wednesday, May 28, 1997 ET — a BMT Land Trust to sponsor tour of local historical sites Once there was everything there—homes, schools, a church, a, hotel, the livelihoods of hun- dreds of people. Now, little else but foundation stones and memo- ries remains of the lumber towns of Ricketts and Stull, the tannery at Noxen and the ice-cutting in- dustry at Mountain Springs. + Many of the thousands of for- ested acres that surrounded and supported Ricketts and Mountain Springs, the property of Civil War hero Col. R. Bruce Ricketts (whose stone mansion still stands at nearby Ganoga Lake), became the heart of Ricketts Glen State Park. Much of the land surrounding Noxen and Stull is now a part of State Game Lands No. 57 which is adjacent to Ricketts Glen State Park. On June 7, the Back Mountain Regional Land Trust wil sponsor a tour of the sites of Noxen, Stull, Mountain Springs, and Ricketts. ‘Commentary will be given by F. Charles Petrillo, author of Ghost Towns of North Mountain: Ricketts, Mountain Springs and Stull, and by Jay Krothe, Ricketts Glen State Park naturalist. There is no charge for this tour but donations will be welcomed. Funds raised will help support the land conservation activities of the Land Trust, a nonprofit group formed to assist landowners in Luzerne, Wyoming and Susquehanna counties who wish to preserve their land from devel- opment pressure. The tour will be held weather- permitting on Sat., June 7, begin- ning at 9 a.m. at the Grange Bank parking lot in Noxen, intersection of Routes 309 and 29. It should conclude by 12:30 p.m. Carpools and bring-your-own picnic lunches will be the order of the day. The tour's raindate will be Saturday, June 14.
