The first year is usually one for watching, learning and warming the bench. The story is different for Dallas softball player, Sherri Kuderka. After the Mounts game Monday, in which she was 4-for-4, she led the team in average (.571 with 16 hits in 28 at bats) and RBI's. “I receive a lot of support from my teammates and also give it back,” said Kuderka. “We cer- tainly have a team concept type atmosphere.” Desire and the sheer joy of play- ing the game are a couple of things that get Sherri motivated for games, as her team is 3-4 after the first half of the season. Ever since she started playing tee-ball at the age of six, Kuderka has had a great love for the game. “I have always liked baseball,” said Sherri, who is Dallas’s start- ing catcher. “I try to get every- thing right and try my hardest every time.” “She really has been our most consistent offensive threat,” head coach Jay Pope said. “She has certainly anchored a tough posi- tion defensively as a catcher.” Along with support from her teammates, Kuderka said she re- ceives a great deal of help from her family and coaches. “The coaches have been great and my family has kept me from being to cocky,” the 16-year old said. “My parents have always told me not to think too much about what is said about me.” Although Kuderka has stepped up to face a higher level of pitch- ing, her bat hasn't cooled. “Sherri has one of the quickest bats have seen in all of the years I have coached,” Pope said. “She hits the ball so hard that, sometimes, the fielders do not even have a chance toreact. As she continues to hit, she becomes more and more confident,” remarked Pope. Javy Lopez, an all-star catcher for the Atlanta Braves, is her fa- vorite player to watch. “I watch him and learn from him,” Kuderka said. In other seasons, Sherri plays field hockey as a centerback. She also loves to watch baseball on television and attend games.
