Section 2 Wednesday, April 2, 1997 Good hit, 00d field, pitching By JENNIFER KLAIPS Post Correspondent LEHMAN - It's a warm, sunny day. A crack of the bat is heard, followed by a roar from the crowd. After weeks of spring training and preparation, baseball season has finally arrived, and the Lake-Leh- man Black Knights baseball team is looking forward to its upcoming season and what it has to offer. The Knights had a successful season lastyear, as they advanced to playoffs. They were led by three senior all-conference players, in- cluding John Oliver, who was drafted as the top pick of the Cincinnati Reds. Lake-Lehman coach Chip Sorber explained how the loss of these players will affect this year's team. “We won't score as many runs as we did last year, but we'll still be good offensively.” This season’s team will be led by three seniors, Joe Halowich (captain,) Jarrett Perlis, and Mike Woronko (captain.) The rest of the lineup consists of mostly under- classmen, including three fresh- men who will see plenty of action. Despite the team being young, Sorber expects the Knights to be competitive in their league. Other favorites in their nine-team league include Meyers, Bishop Hoban, Seton Catholic, and Northwest. Hitting will be one of the strong points. Halowich credited this year’s Knights with having a good lineup of hitters. "There are no weak spots,” he said. "~~ Woronko said he expects there will be more contributors on both offense and defense. "We have more depth this year," he said. Sorber feels that pitching may be questionable. There is depth at pitching, and hopefully with more experience, the staff will comple- ment the offense. As for the de- fense, "It will be solid," Halowich said.
