L& J 3 a The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, February 12, 1997 #5 Dogs (continued from page 1) mind any hardship or inconve- nience when it comes to making these dogs comfortable or provid- ing ‘a loving home. “They're coming up the road now," Whitney says after the last phone call. Eighteen dazed bewil- dered greyhounds, refugees from certain annihilation, emerge from the van to romp in Ann's snow- covered dog pen. "They're beauti- ful," ‘whispers Jean Delinsky of Edwardsville. She likes the brown andtan brindle, but realizes as a first-time foster home volunteer she'll have already been assigned one of the dogs. "It doesn't matter, they are all beautiful," she says. The greyhounds are a compli- ant‘breed. Adoring and patient, they are groomed and examined by.a dog handler for vermin and pests that are part of their lives. Some have permanent scars from the .overhead gates at the tracks and. one female has a smashed foot, but all are so happy to have all this human attention directed at them. None of their injuries are very. serious or will prevent them from becoming perfect family pets. . The dogs finally huddle together at.the pen gate for warmth and companionship. Dallas volunteer Sandy Shaifer scolded some for fighting, but Louise Mitchneck noted some of these dogs didn't know each other well. After bring- ing the dogs in, grooming, exam- ining them, and taking their pic- tures, Veronica and Joan Bangyar take Nikki home to Plymouth. They hope she'll be happy with Band Wally Pumpkin, their other grey- hound, and the four cats. Ann Whitney still has 18 other greyhounds that need adoption or foster homes. Foster home dogs are usually kept for a one to three week period before a permanent home is found. Many foster dogs are adopted readily into their fos- ter home families. These dogs are real easy to like and get along easily with other animals. For more information about adopting a dog or providing a tem- porary foster home, call Ann Whitney of Greyhound Rescue at 639-2612. “If just one dog is adopted as a result of this article, I'll be happy,” she said. Although he does not plan on building a home on the property, he says he will put the trailer on a foundation. George Swan has also chal- lenged the ordinance. In July 1995, Swan placed a trailer on Sedlar Road without consulting the zoning board, according to Kozick. The township notified Swan in January 1996 that his trailer placement was not legal. No resolution has been reached in this dispute. Kozick said that the last time the ordinance was challenged was in the 1970's. During those dis- putes, the courts ruled for the township, keeping the ordinance intact. The supervisors announced that Cellular One hopes to enter into a lease agreement with the township to build a 285 foot tower on township property. Supervisor Frank Wagner said the tower will benefit both cellular phone users ’ and the township. Wagner ex- plained that the township would enter a long term lease with the company, but terms have not yet been worked out. Townend also discussed the" case filed against the township and the Dallas Area Municipal Authority by Jim Davis. Davis’ house was damaged in February 1996, according to zoning officer Kozick, after a rapid thaw caused” sewer water to back up into his home. Dallas Township is asking to be dismissed from the case because it is not responsible. “= “Wn i“ 4 a Tell our advertisers you saw them in The Dallas Post. They'll appreciate it, and so will we.
