In South America, it is a custom for the more fortu- nate children of villages to cel- ebrate their birthdays with chil- dren in orphanages. Sr. Andre says, “It was just beautiful. In they walk with cookies and cake. It just about made me cry.” Sr. Andre explains that the Birthday Party for the Poor is ca- sual dress. She tells guests to wear something warm and com- fortable. “It’s nice for adults to get out. January is usually bleak and Lent is just about to start.” For those who wish to contrib- ute but cannot attend, donations can be sent to Sisters of Mercy, Box 369, Dallas, PA 18612. Sister Andre's Birthday Party for the Poor is held the first Saturday of Feb- ruary every year. In 1996, Sr. Andre's Birthday Party for the Poor earned almost $7,000. Sr. Andre says their goal for this year is $10,000. All the donated money will go to the EDWARD A. Andre Dembowski : Sisters of Mercy Catherine McAuley Center, which provides housing and other ser- vices to poor women and children in Lackawanna and Luzerne coun- ties. Sister Andre explains that Catherine McAuley founded the Sisters of Mercy in the 1830's, of which Andre is a member. She says, “Our primary thrust is for the poor, but our mission is very diverse. Our sisters are lawyers, doctors, social workers, teachers.” The Catherine McAuley Center helps the poor locally with hous- ing through the Frances Warde House for single, low-income women, through single dwellings in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton, and “‘nior: citizens, through the Cross Apartments, which are low-income, two bed- room apartments. Sr. Andre says, “I'love these things. As a country, we have very little low-income housing.” She explains her belief, “Give them a break. Give them a chance and they will make it.” The center also provides women with counseling, prepares them for job interviews, and helps them find adequate apartments. An- other program created by the cen- ter, called Health span, gives se- low-income fami- lies, and past residents of the McAuley houses access to health care, stressing prevention and wellness programs. Sister Andre, who is Director of the Mercy Associates Program, has been with the Sisters of Mercy for 36 years. The Mercy Associ- ates Program is made up of men and women, married and single who associate with the Sisters of Mercy and share in ongoing spiri- tual development and networking of services. Ridge praises Lake-Lehman on visit By KYLIE SHAFFERKOETTER Post Staff LEHMAN - Governer Tom Ridge came to Lake-Lehman High School Jan. 22 to present a $44,000 check to help the district purchase addi- tional computers and support teacher training. The money is part of more than $20 million awarded to 297 pub- lic school districts statewide as the first installment of funding under Link-to-Learn, Ridge's three year, S121 million initiative to help schools acquire and upgrade computers and provide related teacher training. Ridge viewed the two computer labs and the library computers at the school. Teachers explained to Correction him various uses for the comput- ers as Ridge saw students work- ing firsthand. He talked to stu- dents about their projects and the computers. “Technology will empower us if we learn how to use it,” Ridge said to a packed auditorium of stu- dents. “It’s a learning experience that extends beyond the bounds of the classroom.” Roseanne Ragnacci, technical The three sisters who are running the London Marathon to aid the Leukemia Society and four-year-old Anthony Carroll of Scranton have six weeks left of fund raising, not six months as the Post reported in the Jan. 22 issue.
