Church takes a name that better reflects its mission By KYLIE SHAFFERKOETTER Post Staff DALLAS - Many of us have felt like “changing our name at one time or another. One local church decided to do just that. The Grace Community Church, formerly the Community Church of Dallas, has an identity crisis no longer. The non-denominational con- gregation felt a new name better expressed their purpose. The present pastor, Daniel J. Fabricatore said the church ‘preaches God's word directly from the Bible and lives by His grace. Another motive for changing ‘the name was the previous name's ‘blandness, as many variations ‘appeared on church mail. “There was a lot of confusion, most people didn't know our name,” said Fabricatore. “We received mail ‘under five different names. We ‘had an identity crisis,” he said with a laugh. * The church members wanted a good name, which would both identify them and convey their belief. There are two signs on both Route 118 and 415, making the church easy to locate. ~The beginnings of the church appeared in 1966 when a few people began to meet in Shaver- town and Dallas homes. Later that same year, the small congre- gation held services at the Shav- ertown Elementary School, which SKI TIP #7 by Sean O'Shea Q. Library fund drive on track, but there's more to be done Imagine yourself as a child of eight, having to wait outside be- cause story hour at the library was too crowded, or having to look up at your favorite book - way out of reach on a high shelf. This is a familiar scene for many of the 200 children that visit the Back Mountain Memorial Library each day. More than 12,000 books, sev- eral display cases, and a jumble of tables are all crowded into a small classroom in the former Dallas Borough High School, making a formidable environment for a child of any age. In September, the Library kicked off a capital campaign, en- titled “Watch Ideas Soar!” for the construction of a new Children’s Wing. This new wing will provide increased shelf space within children’s reach, study carrels and computer stations, expanded table area seating, and a performance area for storytelling and multime- dia presentations. The campaign chairman, Dr. Wallace F. Stettler, has announced that “Watch Ideas Soar!” is about halfway complete. At upcoming campaign meetings, division chairpersons John Gager, Kathi Flack, Jack Meeks, and Beth Rosenthal, will rally the legion of campaign volunteers to complete the task of contacting as many members of the Back Mountain and business community as can be reached within the next few months of the active campaign. The Pennsylvania State Depart- ment of Education has recently announced the approval of a $200,000 Keystone Grant to be used solely for the construction of the new wing. Although the state grant funds and the campaign pledges received to date will meet the minimum goal of $500,000 for the purpose of beginning construction in 1997, substantial funds are still needed to equip and furnish the wing upon completion, to purchase new materials and fill the shelves, and to fund an endowment to cover new planned activities and the increased costs of operating the new wing. This endowment fund, which is being created especially for the Children’s Wing, is intended to ensure successful operation not only for today’s children, but also for generations to come.
