Jim Jaster's two free throws in the closing seconds paced Hosey's A.C. to a 56-51 championship won over Camp Orchard Hill in the Dallas Rec Summer Basket- ball League. The league's two best teams locked horns for 40 minutes in a nip and tuck affair. John Duessler’'s eight points helped Hosey's to a 32-27 half time lead. Jay McGovern's 13 points kept the Hill in the game. Jaster took over the offensive load for the victors as he fired in 11 second half points to finish - with 15. McGovern's 15 kept the losers close, but the veteran Hosey’s squad held on for their third straight title. Rich Pincofski chipped in 12 for the champs while Derrick Johnson added 11. McGovern led all scorers with 28, but Camp Orchard Hill could not place an- other player in double figures. Once again the Back Mountain was treated to some outstanding summer basketball in a league that features players from ages 15 to 45. The league promises to be back next summer better than ever. The triathlon, which combines swimming, bik- ing and running, is one of the most demanding and challenging competitions in all of sport. Participants can be part of a relay team, with each athlete do- ing one leg of the race. Or, the true iron men and women can push their bodies to the limit through all three legs of the race. However, they must be pushing themselves, while at the same time pacing themselves. You must pace yourself in order to finish this grueling event. Several local athletes will take part in the 15th annual event. Wayne Devine has competed in 13 of the triathlons. This will be Wayne's first year competing in the Masters’ Class (40+). Wayne works out with several friends and says that they train “basically to keep in shape.” He trains year-round, running daily near his home and swimming at the YMCA in the winter and in Harvey's Lake in the summer. In early May, Wayne begins biking to prepare his body for that phase of the race. Wayne says that his best finish at the Back Mountain Triathlon was two hours and 20 minutes. He is quick to point out that this was when he was “alittle younger.” Asked what time will win the Masters’ Class he said, “I think 2:10 or under will win it. There are a lot of tremendous competi- tors that come from all over to race here, and the support of the people from the Back Mountain is overwhelming.” Wayne says that his goal for this year is to finish the race injury-free. Ed Onzik will be competing in his third Back Mountain Triathlon in four years, having missed last year's race. Ed finished in 1993 in just under three hours. In 1994, he felt that he had better times but did not get the chance . to swim, along with several oth- Pat Persico competed as an individual last year. This year she's 1/3 of Team Rittenhous. Also competing in the Masters’ Class for the first time, Ed, a manager for the Senate Construc- tion Company, doesn't have a great deal of time to train. Still, he finds the time. He is in training all year long, waking at 5:00 a.m. to either bike or run. Ed admits he is not a strong swimmer, and he cites that as his weakest part of the race.
