POST PHOTOS/JIM PHILLIPS By LEN KRYESKI Sports Writer DALLAS - Less than one week after been appointed the new Dal- las Area varsity boys’ basketball coach, Eric Lawson decided to hold a meeting with his troops. They heeded his call. Thirty- two would-be Mountaineer hoopsters made the. 7:30 reorganizational meeting, Monday night at the Dallas recreation cen- ter. @Lawsony awproduct of the Hanover Area program, invited all interested prospects from grades seven through 12 to the get-to- gether. The 32 were added to a list that includes five football players un- able to show because of condi- tioning drills. About a half dozen or so other boys also got in touch with Lawson prior to Monday to express an interest. Vacations and other kept others [rom the briefing, which lasted only about half an hour. Co ol “It was just to meet the kids and let them see me,” said Lawson. “I didn't want to get into style, philosophy or anything of that nature. Overall, I was pleased.” Lawson was able to provide them with a planning schedule for the summer. Summer leagues have been underway for some time for players at all levels, and while they may be getting a late start, Dallas will have little trouble get- ting involved. Lawson, the athletic director for. the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth. Center, runs summer leagues for a living and mentioned his varsity, junior varsity and jun- ior high players will all be able to see quality action before heading back to class. A spot was held open for Dallas at the upcoming Wilkes University camp. After scoring 1,000 points and graduating [rom Hanoverin 1987, Lawson continued his basketball and academic careers at Wilkes, serving as a co-captain for Ron Rainey. Alter graduation, Lawson traded in his shorts and tank top for a suit and tie, spending a season on the pines as an assis- tant coach before Jerry Rickrode replaced Rainey at the helm of the NATIONAL COMES UP SHORT Back Mountain National's playoff season came to an end Friday in a 3-2 loss to Plains. A win would have put National irito the District 16 final. In left photo, Jim Belles wound up early in the * New basketball coach gathers his troops early Colonel program. The past three seasons he's filled the shoes of head junior high coach for the Comets of Crestwood. After two series of interviews, the Dallas School board decided he’s the right man to replace Paul Brown, who resigned from the post last March. For Lawson, it's the right position at the right time. “It's been a goal of mine to run a team at the high school level,” Lawson said, adding he's an edu- calor by trade in the market for a teaching position. Securing such a job at Dallas would complete the cycle. He's hoping to become more than just a basketball coach in the Back Mountain and get in- volved with the entire commu- nity. He's also very fond of the See NEW COACH, pg 10 POST PHOTOS/JIM PHILLIPS game. He pitched four innings. Above right, Josh Bryant laid down a bunt. He either walked or sacrificed each time at bat. One of those simple little plays that helped decide the outcome in a big, tightly contested game. : The level of play doesn't mat- ter, in baseball you must learn to capitalize on your opportunities. Back Mountain did just that Mon- day night and the result allowed them to capture the District 16 Junior League title by a score of 12-11 over West Pittston. The championship game was a high-scoring duel that featured a little of everything. Yet, it was one of those simple plays provid- ing momentary action that en- abled Back Mountain to win brag- ging rights as well as the district flag. With his team trailing by a run with one man down in the sixth, Brian Vetter had just struck out with two men in scoring position. Fortunately for Back Mountain, the pitch ended up in the dirt and with first base open, catcher Phillip Kirby was forced to throw out Vetter since he didn't catch the McGovern rips nets for 32, Camp still 1/2 game back Jay McGovern fired in 32 points to lead Camp Orchard Hill to a 90- 79 win over The Lion Inc. in the Dallas Boro. When Dave Katyl. manager of the Back Mountain stars, saw what was unfolding before him the reaction was immediate - he sent home John Bucha. “As soon as the catcher throws that ball to first, the runner on third is gone,” said Katyl who also served as third base coach. After recording out number two, firstbasemandJonathan Yonkondy fired a ball back to Kirby hoping to keep the speedy Bucha from tying the score. Instead the throwsailed off line.
