The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, July 10, 1996 dl) Jack Hilsher As my old Sunday Independent §@ editor used to say, “Jack, this is be og J no place for ‘think pieces.” so I didn’t, write any. But that was then and this is now. What brought me to this was a recent column by Bill Thompson, former Leaderassociate editorand now a columnist for a Texas news- paper., Under the heading "FBI's Victory, was a Wimp's Way Out.” Thompson criticized the govern- ment for taking 81 days to “nego- tiate with thugs” and resolve the standoff in Montana. Considering the debacles at Ruby Ridge and Waco it is under- standable that Justice and FBI chose to move cautiously. Th- ompson seemed lo wish [or “deci- sive action” and while he brought up, some [air arguments I'm not sure he fully understood exactly the type of minds the government was dealing with in those Free- man bodies. There is always a con- cern with these people because unfortunately, a number live on the edge.” He should know. There are 35 to 40 militias in Ohio with more than 1.000 active members. There is a total of 441 known paramili- tary groups found in all states. Some have thousands of sympa- thizers, average people discon- tented with the two major parties. Many find this scary. and rightly SO. Typical of the situations they cause is the recent arrest of one Larry Martz. He was picked up alter a scuffle with a state trooper and his recent trial, which at- tracted no national interest what- soever, is worth consideration for what it revealed about one mem- ber of a militia group. His were called Patriots. Martz. 53, and single, played football in high school, studied forestry. served three years in the Army as a lab technician. The judge pre- vailed however. and Martz started calling him “sir” so often the judge had to tell him it was not neces- sary. During the altercation with the state trooper Martz admitted he had a loaded handgun in his belt but had told the trooper “I don't have anything personally against you. The world is a messed up place. I'm part of the militia. I could have killed you at any point.” Getting lo my point, jurors were told of what was found in this nutl’'s pickup truck: two assault rifles, a shotgun and a .45 hand- gun. all loaded. and 1.337 rounds ofammunition in the cab, plus six more guns and 3,800 rounds in the truck. The prosecutor said, “This trooper found a time bomb ready to go off. Fortunately he got to it before it did. Did Mr. Martz think Trooper Fulton was after him that day? Mr. Martz thinks everyone's after him. He's out there to pro- tect us. From what? From whom? I submit that we need to be pro- tected from him.” The jury deliberated only a few hours before returning a guilty verdict. The judge, saying he would "not let the militia intimi- date the judiciary.” gave him two years in prison. Marlz looked stunned. Amen. works.
