Elmecrest resident Lisa McCartney designed the auction's ox yoke logo in a contest open to Dallas and Lake-Lehman high school art students. Featured sale items were a lovely framed arrangement of pressed pansies, several afghans, an original photo of Elvis Presley and an antique wooden Wurlitzer jukebox containing 160 records in mint condition. Lenora Hayden and Joan Ogurkis designed hand-painted signed souvenir tickets for those who purchased antiques. Gertrude Moss was featured in a newspaper article as one of the originators of the Ham ‘N Yegg Club. a group whose official name had been coined in 1967. Mrs. Moss. her husband, William. and Dallas Post columnist Mrs. T.M.B. Hicks came up with the idea of people donating $10 to the auc- tion in place of the hams given the first year. many of which turned moldy due to the lack of refrigera- tion. An autographed photo of popu- lar actor John Wayne was re- ceived for sale the day Wayne died. The first night's bidding hit a new record of nearly $10,000. The last of the lovely dolls hand- made by the late Mrs. Jennie Newman was donated [or sale. Mrs. Newman had made more than 1.000 exquisilely dressed dolls wearing long. flowing gowns. taffeta slips. veils or hats and capes for the auction. No two were alike. The last one, finished by her daughter, will be on permanent display in the library. A photo of Mrs. Myra Risley outbidding her husband, Howard, at $2.650 for a two-seater Ford Thunderbird in 1955 accompa- nied an auction article in the Sun- day Independent. Mrs. Crump opened the book booth for the Dallas firemen’s car- nival. July 12, 1980: A record $5,326 was earned on the first night of the auction, which grossed more than $50,000. Celebrity items included a shirt autographed by members of The Statler Brothers, an autographed photo of the singing group The Village People and a Penn State football signed by coach Joe Paterno. In 1981 Dallas resident John Thomas realized a childhood dream when he bought Mrs. Risley's 1955 two-seater candy apple red Thunderbird convert- ible. which he had fallen in love with when it was first sold across the block in 1955.
