By LEN KRYESKI Sports Writer BACK MOUNTAIN - Over the past seven years, Paul Callahan has become quite familiar with a group of girls known as the Drag- ons. He's watched them mature from grade school through high school. During that time he's seen the girls graduate from toy chests to automobiles while pass- ing through numerous other phases and crazes in-between. The Dragons are just one of a number of traveling soccer clubs that hail from the Back Moun- tain. Callahan's been teaching and coaching the game of soccer - year round - through the various age divisions to practically the same group of girls since 1989. “We've seen them all grow up since the team started playing together in 1989,” said Callahan, “and they're alldriving themselves to practice now. It makes you turn around and wonder where did the time go?” On occasion, the Dragons have lost a player or two, usually be- cause of their parents relocating. Likewise, they've added some play- ers along the way, but 10 mem- bers of the current roster of 16 have run the soccer gambit to- skills in Europ gether under Callahan each of the last seven years. The majority of the girls will be seniors in high school come fall. This will be their last year playing together, but before it’s over they'll embark on one final journey with coach Callahan. The Dragons will visit Europe next July with plans to compete in atl least one European tourna- ment. Theidea came as a result of a very successful showing in the United Junior League out of Philadelphia last fall. “We won the league during our first year, which was pretty out- standing,” said Callahan. The Dragons played in the pres- tigious league to witness just how well their skills ranked against some prime competition.
