DOVE Post Staff DALLAS - For the third time in six years, school bus driver Anita Kuchemba has brought home a plaque from Luzerne Intermedi- ate Unit 18's annual School Bus Drivers’ Safety Road-e-o. Kuchemba, 30, of Dallas, placed third this year, winning a $10 gilt certificate and a plaque. In 1992 she placed second, and in 1991 - her first year as a profes- sional driver — she also placed third. “It was nerve-wracking, even though everybody says it's just for fun,” she said. “The written part was the hardest. You never know what they'll ask and some of the choices were ambiguous.” The competition consists of a 50-question written exam and a two-part session behind the wheel of a school bus. Kuchemba found the written section a challenge because it included material on diesel buses and buses with air brakes, which she doesn’t encoun- ter in her job. The federal government re- quires drivers of buses with air brakes to obtain a special certifi- cation on their commercial driv- ers’ licenses (CDL), she said. In the practical section, drivers had to place their buses’ dual wheels exactly between two rows of cut-off tennis balls and drive for a short distance, navigate the S-bends of a serpentine course and drive through a diminishing alley which narrowed to four ANITA KUCHEMBA inches wider than the bus. They also had to pass a simulated rail- road crossing and a bus stop. Drivers also faced the dreaded “Bug Bus,” a school bus with five defects which they had to find during a six-minute inspection. Kuchemba was one of seven Dallas drivers to enter the compe- tition and the only one to place in the top three. She is the alternate to the state competition in June.
