‘o 4 Spring Home and Yard The Dallas Post April 17, 1996 ie Deer resistant landscapes can b By DAVID MULL, RLA J. Franklin Styer Nurseries One of the issues many homeowners are concerned with are selecting deer resistant plant materials. Several major univer- sities and concerned nurserymen have conducted a studies to de- termine what plant varieties were deer resistant. As a landscape architect for J. Franklin Styer Nurseries in Concordville, PA,. and co-designer for our exhibit in the 1994 Phila- delphia Flower Show, I addressed this concern in great detail. I supplemented the lists from these studies with my own landscaping experiences. I used this master plant list to build a working pal- ette rich with horticultural beauty and diversity. Several key points I learned are outlined below. First, deer resis- tant does not mean deer proof, rather it indicates plants that are less likely to be damaged or plants that aren't the deer’s first choice for consumption. Second, chemical treatments have short-term effectiveness while physical constraints (fences) can be either unsightly or cost prohibitive. Third, deer are creatures of habit. They feed or travel in areas they've grown up around, even if that patch of woodland has been converted to a housing subdivi- $ OLD FURNITURE IS A TREASURE $ Turn Grandma's table Into a valuable conversation piece. Fourth, if deer are hungry enough (or if the food supply is very scarce in severe winters) they will eat almost anything. There- fore, at times, even deer resistant plants are at risk. One of the most asked-about trees in our flower show exhibit was the River Birch (Betula nigra ‘Heritage’). Prized for its rapid growth and salmon-colored bark, it can reach a height of 30-35 feet in most settings. This tree is resistance to both leaf miner and birch bark borer and thrives in wet soil. Because of its drought tolerance when established, my experiences with it rate it as the best birch for the mid-Atlantic states. When selecting plants for deer resistant landscapes, you should make deer-resistant choices which have comparable form and tex- ture of plant that are commonly eaten. Japanese Cryptomeria (Cryptomeria japonica Yoshino’) is a great substitution for Cana- dian Hemlock. While Japanese Cryptomeria prefers an open, sunny site to light over-story shade, it has a similar light and feathery texture. The foliage is a beautiful bright blue-green in the summer and turns slightly bronze- green in colder weather. Japanese Pieris (Pieris japonica) and English Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) are two staples in e rich with interest the deer resistant plant palette. Japanese Pieris can be used where you might be inclined to use Aza- leas or Hybrid Rhododendrons on a site where deer browsing was nota concern. Some success with the several varieties of Dwarf Rhododendron (Rhododendron ‘PJM’, ‘Balta’, and ‘Olga Mezitt' just to name a few) has been ob- served. Their resistant qualities can be atrributed to their parent- age to the native Carolina Rhodo- dendron (Rhododendron carolinianum). Other broadleaf evergreens of merit are (Rhododendron carolinianum) and Holly See LANDSCAPES, pg 5 RETAINING WALLS WERE YOU PLANNING ON HAVING A PRESSURE-TREATED RETAINING WALL INSTALLED? The latter's hardiness dictates that it be used in a protected spot away from drying winter winds. From a distance, its shiny, leathery, pointed foliage suggests Holly. Growing to a height of eight to 12 feet, it will require room to spread. Deer seem to find its sharp, spiny foliage unpalatable. Similar quali- ties can be found in Oregon Grapeholly (Mahonia aquifolium), William Penn Barberry (Berberis x gladwynensis ‘William Penn’), and Chinese Holly (Ilex cornuta ‘Rotunda’). After decades of use in Europe, ornamental grasses have become very popular landscape plants in the United States. Many grasses have fine serrations along the blade edges which make them undesirable for consumption by deer. A pleasing combination with multiseason interest can be achieved by using Maiden Grass (Miscanthus sinensis ‘Gracillimus’), Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’), and Dwarf Fountain Grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hameln’). These grasses differ in both height and spread, and their blooming periods are staggered throughout the summer months. Their year round beauty, drought tolerance, and ease of mainte- nance makes them desirable ad- ditions to any landscape. Colorful, highly attractive plantings can be designed by com- bining the ornamental grasses with one or more of the compan- ion perennials like Tickseed (Core- opsis verticillate ‘Moonbeam’), Stonecrop (Sedum spectabile ‘Au- tumn Joy’), Yarrow (Achillea millefolium ‘Fire King’), Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia), Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Goldturm’), and Speed- well (Veronica spicata ‘Sunny Border Blue’). For the shade, Hostas and Astilbes are popular gardening perennials. Unfortunately, deer feed on these two plant varieties with great gusto. Consider using two common fern, Hayscented Fern (Dennstaedtia puntilobula) or Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides). They provide a nice contrast in form, with Cinna- mon Fern being upright and arch- ing in habit while Christmas Fern is low, bushy and spreading. Barrenwort (Epimedium x versicolor ‘Sulphureum’) and Bethlehem Sage (Pulmonaria saccharata ‘Mrs. Moon’) are two low-growing shade loving peren- nials which will compliment ferns nicely. Barrenwort features deli- cate, heart-shaped leaves and yellow flowers, while Bethlehem Sage has pink flowers suspended above lovely silvery-white mottled foliage. 3 For more information on deer resistant plant material, contact your local nurseryman, land- scaper, or garden center profes- sional. Many manufacturers offer a va- riety of low E coatings for specific climates. Does The Manufacturer Offer A Warranty? A well-constructed thermal pane unit should last a minimum of 10 years. However, many manufacturers offer only a one-year warranty. When looking into the coverage, find out if the installer’s workmanship is also under warranty.
