But that doesn't stop the students from learning how to serve the ball, rotate, and keep score. ; “It also gives the kids a chance to see me as a person, not just their teacher. And I like it - the kids are fun, they're really neat,” she says fondly. One of Mrs. Crabtree’s former students (and star volleyball play- ers) is now student teaching at Dallas Elementary School. Wendy Cave, a senior special education major at College Misericordia, and 1992 Dallas High School gradu- ate, recalls her volleyball games with Mrs. Crabtree many years ago. “Iremember how excited all the kids got for the volleyball games,” says Wendy, “We just couldn't wait to play. And at the end of the year, we played a game against the teachers.” She continues, “I'd love to try the same thing with my special education students.” Wendy then went on to play competitive volleyball throughout her high school years. Mrs. Crabtree’s love of teaching and volleyball inspired Wendy to work toward similar goals. “She's the reason I wanted to get into teach- ing,” Wendy says. Mrs. Crabtree, who in the past has played competitive volleyball in a Tunkhannock women’s league, as well as recreational vol- leyball with fellow teachers at the Westmoreland Elementary School, doesn’t limit herself to one sport. In fact, she admits she doesn’t have as much time for volleyball anymore, because she's . found a new love - the game of tennis.
