Lady Mounts top Lehman 47-41

A 17 point fourth quarter car-
ried the Dallas girls to a 47-4
victory over arch rival Lake-
Lehman Saturday afternoon. The
Wyoming Valley Converence Divi-
sion 2, matchup was made good
from earlier in the week.
Dallas built up a 21-15 lead at
intermission, but the second half
was a game of spurts. Each team’s
defense and pressure had their
moments, and both schools scored
26 points in the final 16 minutes.
The Lady Mounts key surge be-
gan at the 5:56 mark of the fourth
quarter. By 5:03 Dallas had scored
six unanswered points and in-
creased their lead to 37-31.
Robin Suda scored the first
basket, but a missed free throw
foiled a three point play. Follow-
ing a Lehman turnover, sister
Stacey put back a missed shot.
After a steal by Robin, forward
Adrienne Camp followed with an-
other basket via an offensive re-
bound.
Lehman would pull within a
basket two more times, but aftera
Dallas timeout at 3:43 the Knights
were outscored 8-4.
Following the break in action,
Kim Barbacci's crew ran their
motion offense to perfection,
spread the ball around and away
from the stingy Lehman defense.
Playing point guards Holly Baseski
and Katie Austin simultaneously
helped control the tempo of the
game.
Dallas appeared ready to put
the game away midway through
the third period. A basket by
Camp at 4:11 provided the only
double digit lead of the afternoon,
28-18. Lehman then tied up the
score with four unanswered bas-
kets including baack-to-back
treys by guard Kelly Spencer. Back
court mate Adrienne Miroslaw
picked up three steals during the
sequence.
Barbacci and Dick Morgan ro-
tated just seven girls during the
closely contested battle. Sarah
Barlow joined Camp, Baseskiand
the Sudas in the Dallas starting
lineup. Austin and Sara Misson
also saw action.
For Lehman, Rachel Kaufman,
Darby Wolfe and Tanya Verbyla
started alongside Spencer and
Miroslaw. Nicki Bouthot and
Marie Manzoni came off the bench.
Robin Suda led all players with
16 points, 13 rebounds, five steals
and a blocked shot. Camp added
eight points, eight rebounds and
three steals. Stacey Suda fin-
ished with eight points and four
rebounds.
Spencer paced the Black Knight -
attack with 13 points. Miroslaw
added nine to go along with six
steals. Wolfe added eight points.
The victory raised the Lady
Mounts league record 4-1. The
week ahead will go a long way in
determining the first half champi-
onship. Dallas will entertain
Meyers on Thursday and visit
Hanover on Monday.
Lehman slipped to 2-3. They'll
battle Hanover at home Thursday
and travel to Wilkes-Barre Mon-
day to face G.A.R.
Black Knights pin
Berwick in opener
By LEN KRYESKI
Sports Writer
The Lake-Lehman wrestling
team opened defense of their Wyo-
ming Valley Conference title with
a convincing 42-13 victory over
Berwick at home Saturday night.
With the score tied at seven
after four bouts and Berwick look-
ing suprisingly tough, 130 pound
Eric Maciejczak took control. The
sophomore recorded Lehman's
first pin of the regular season by
showing Jason Jury the lights in
3:21 after buildingupa 12-4 lead.
it was the first of eight consecu-
tive wins for the Knights. 140
pound Joe Halowich and 152
pound Mike Pitcavage also regis-
tered pins during the streak.
Halowich, a returning district
champ, jumped out to a 4-1 lead
over Mike Fenstermacher before
finishing him with 28-seconds
remaining in the first period.
Pitcavage picked up six for the
team by pinning Kip McCabe in
3:00. The three-sport senior ath-
lete was ahead 6-2 at the time.
Following Pitcavage's victory,
Ned Walsh and Berwick's Paul
Ervin met at 167 for what may
have been the most competitive
match of the night. Most of the
battle was fought standing up,
each man trying to lure the other
into an error. Losing 3-2 in the
third period, Walsh brought Ervin
to the mat with under 45-seconds
remaining. The two point
takedown provided him with his
lead at 4-3. After atimeout, Walsh
did a great job in the final 15
seconds to keep Ervin from gar-
nering an escape and tying the
match.
Other decisions in the streak
included Brian Butler's 10-4 win
over Jason DiGiondonmenico at
135, Pat Rogowski defeated Rick

Welch 5-3 at 189.
Jake Santee and Mick Konigus
picked up major decisions at 145
and 171 respectively. Santee
handled Andy Melchiore while
Konigus took care of the Bulldogs’
Jim DePasquale 12-4.
Lehman's run of eight victories
quieted the Bulldog bench and
their fans. The ‘Dawgs jumped
out on top when Nick Raczkowski
lost a 7-3 decision to Mark Fisher
in the 103 pound bout. Brother
Matt got Lehman on the
scoreboard with a 9-3 win over
Justin Bohl. It was a super effort
by Matt who was slowed by an
illness suffered earlier in the week.
Bill Breha gave Lehman a 7-3
lead with a 14-6 major decision
over Nathan Kreischer. That lead
was short lived as Class AAA dis-
trict runner-up Brent Yates fol-
lowed with a decisive 13-5 win
over Black Knight freshman Sam
Saylor.
Ragowski's win at 189 put
Lehman ahead 42-7 heading into
the heavyweight final. The
Knights’ Tony Tereska scored first,
but fell behind 3-2 at the end of
the first period. Rob Welch built
up a 9-3 lead, before both wres-
tlers got aggressive. Tereska
scored four of the next six points,
but wound being pinned with 14
ticks on the clock.
The teams exchanged pins in
the only two j.v. bouts on the
night. Lehman's 112-pound
Chester Smith built up an 18-10
lead over Robert Brado in the
third period before notching the
pin with 17-seconds remaining.
At heavyweight, Luke Shook lost
fall to Paul Kile in 1:35.
The Knights travel to Crestwood
on Wednesday, setting up Satur-
day night's home meeting with
Dallas.
