She was past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 698, Bayshore. She and her husband, Russell, recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. She was preceded in death by her son, David; sister, Louise Kivler and brother David Edwards. Surviving in addition to her husband, are a son, Thomas, Bayshore, and four grandchildren. Howorth, 82, for- merly of Lincoln Street, Dallas, died at Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas, where she had been a guest. She had lived in Dallas for more than 30 years and was a member of the Dorranceton United Meth- odist Church, Kingston. Simon Sr., 82, of Edinger Road, Dallas, died Friday ‘Dec. 8, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Born in Houtsdale, he was the son of the late John and Mary Casper Simon. He was a resident of Dallas since 1945. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a coal miner at the Woodward Colliery and later as a foreman for 25 years at Max Yudkovitz Scrapyard, Wilkes- Barre. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Medi- terranean aboard the destroyer USS Edison. He was a member of the Ameri- can Legion Post 525, Luzerne, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Forty Fort. He was preceded in death by a son, John; brothers, Simon, David, Michael, Jacob and Cas- per; sisters, Ruth Chranko and Velma Storm. “Surviving are his wife, the for- mer Dorothy Krist; sons, Abra- ham J. Jr., Dallas; James, Luzerne; daughters, Lois Watkins, Larksville; Anna Watkins, Ed- wardsville; Rebecca Sparlow, Exeter; Dorothy Phillips, Dallas; a sister, Jennie Brassel, Wilkes- Barre; 23 grandchildren; 17 great- grandchildren. Interment was held in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas. ROBERT HESS Robert Graves Hess of Arling- ton, Va., a former resident of Forty Fort and Dallas died Dec. 5 in Arlington. Born Oct. 11, 1908 in Dor- ranceton, he was the son of the late Charles F. and Mary Graves Hess. He was a 1931 graduate of Lehigh University, Bethlehem. In his early career, he was employed by York Corp. of York; Neuman Ice Co., Wilkes-Barre; and Westinghouse Electric Cor- poration, Newark. In 1943, he was employed as chief industrial engineer of the Watertown, N.Y., division of New York Air Brake Co. After several promotions, he became the gen- eral manager of the company in 1952. In 1959, he joined the Sperry- Rand Corp. as president and general manager of the Wright Machinery Co. Division in Dur- ham, N.C. He became chairman and managing director of the Sperry Gyroscope Co. Ltd., in Brentford, England, in 1961. In 1963, he was named vice president and general manager of the Reming- ton Rand Division, with headquar- ters in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, overseeing operations in Mexico, Venezuela, Columbia, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Brazil. In 1968, he retired to Durham, N.C., where he worked six years for Service Corp. of Retired Ex- ecutives. In addition to his professional career, he was an accomplished musician, composer, artist, wood carver and fisherman. He was a member of the Ameri- can Society of Mechanical Engi- neers, past chairman manage- ment division executive commit- tee; National Association of Manu- facturers, Institute of Directors, Great Britain; Yacht Club of Rio de Janeiro; Sunningdale Golf Club, England; and Who's Who in America, World Who's Who in Commerce and Industry, the In- ternational Year Book and States- men’s Who's Who (British). He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Evelyn Pratt; sisters, Amelia Davis, Elizabeth Douglas; and brother, Charles F. Jr. Surviving are children, Phyllis Hatch, Fairfax, Va.; Robert P., Flantridge, Calif,; sister, Ruth Long, Thonotosasa, Fla.; broth- ers, Henry E.; Alva, Fla.; George W., Dallas; four grandsons. Kuffner, 69, Sweet Valley, RR 3, Hunlock Creek, died Friday Dec. 8 at Nesbitt Memorial Hospital, Kingston. Born Oct. 22, 1926, in Aitch, he was the son of the late Anthony and Catherine Molner Kuffner. He lived in Livonia, Mich., for 21 years before moving to Sweet Valley three years ago. He was employed as a mechanic for the Ford Motor Co., Dearborn, Mich., for nine years before retir- ing 10 years ago. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was a mem- ber of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Lake Silkworth, Lehman Township. He and his wife, the former Janis Hoover, celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary onJune 19. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Anthony, Nicholas and John; sisters, Ann Kubiak, Mary Purlich, Sophia Bolterstein and Stephanie Kuffner. Surviving in addition to his wife, is a brother, Frank Kuffner, Saxton. Interment held in Maple Grove Cemetery, Pikes Creek.
