° © Ww The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, November 22, 1995 7 Trucksville UM Church honors Blanche Atherholt "On ‘Sunday November 12, the Trucksville United Methodist Women held an open house in Honor of Blanche Atherholt. She las béen a member of the church since “1920 and celebrated her 90th birthday on Nov. 5. “!Blanche was born in Shaver- town, ‘the daughter of the late Boyd and Jane Hoover Atherholt. Both families were among the early settlers of Kingston Township. In 1909, she and her parents moved to’the house in Trucksville where she continues to live today. <One of her earliest memories of Trucksville was the night the Methodist Episcopal Church biitned. The flames were visible from ‘her parents home just off Carverton Road. From the time the church was rebuilt and dedicated in January 1911, Blanche has participated in many of the major activities of the church. She began attending Sunday School at an early age. As a charter member of the Friend- p Sunday School Class (organ- # in'1933), Blanche held office roughout the years until 1986, when this class became a part of the adult Sunday school class. In 1925 when the Young omen’s Home Missionary Soci- ety was organized by the church, Flanche was a charter member. She held office in the group until 1940, when the structure of the Methodist Church changed and the group was incorporated into the: ‘Women's Society. “Over the years Blanche has continued to have a strong inter- ‘in the mission work of the church, both at the local and fine level. As she has fora number of years, she is preparing for Christmas by making stock- ings, which when filled will be sent to nursing homes for distri- bution to the elderly. Presently she is the key woman for the Trucksville United Meth- odist Women. This includes re- cruiting membership in the Home Guild for the Elderly. Each May she travels to Tunkhannock to participate in the two day sale which contributes to the support of the Methodist Homes for the Elderly. Blanche is known for her bak- ing. On one day every few weeks she makes 24 loaves of bread, shared with neighbors and friends, and is often given to the church for use during Communion serv- ices. Betsy Reynolds Metzger, who came from Allentown to attend the party said, “Blanche was a friend of my grandparents and my parents. She was always there when we needed her.” Margaret Johnson, the present Lay Leader, remembers back in 1940 when her family moved to Trucksville. Blanche was in the church choir, where she has sung continuously since 1918. Her pastor, Rev. Charles Naugle, sees her as the example of one who has given the best of her abilities to the church at each stage of her life, something that she continues to do to the present day. The large number of family and friends who attended the open house attests to the fact that Blanche has given much to others as well as her church. g Senior Citizen's Centers spon- sored by the Luzerne/Wyoming €ounties Bureau for the Aging offer hot noon meals Monday rough Friday to people 60 years age or older.
