2° The Dallas Post - Dallas, PA Wednesday, November 8, 1995 Ns a Lt DAMA offices are being redone for handicap access By GRACE R. DOVE Post Staff .TRUCKSVILLE - Renovations at the Dallas Area Municipal Authority's office will make it easier for customers who have a difficult time getting up the stairs to the second floor offices. An addition to the front of the building will enlarge the offices and add handicapped-accessible facilities, including a restroom and elevator, on the first floor. The elevator will be marked with signs in Braille and print and also have lighted signals for hearing-im- paired customers. . The renovations, expected to cost $285,000, will bring the building into compliance with the federal Americans With Disabili- ties Act, according to general manager Tom Bagley. “We're redesigning the entire second floor,” he said. “We're enlarging all the halls and door- ways so wheelchairs can maneu- ver through them and adding an elevator and ‘generic’ wheelchair- accessible restroom on the first floor. Having to use a wheelchair isn't the only disability — we're trying to take care of sight-or hearing-impaired customers or “anyone who has a difficult time with the front steps. Many of our elderly customers will benefit from it.” The office will also be expanded because more space is needed, he added. The remodeling is a result of a study done in 1994 by the De- partment of Labor and Industry to determine the amount of up- grading public facilities which DAMA needed to comply with the new act, Bagley said. He expects the work to be finished by July. Local contractors are doing the work: design by Eyerman, Csala, Hapeman and Handley; plumb- ing, heating and air conditioning by John Yenason of Dallas; gen- eral contracting by Mit-Pro of Dallas and electrical work by Sarno Electric, Bagley said. Until the work is completed, the office has been relocated to a temporary trailer in the park- ing lot. Corrections and clarifications An article in last week's issue of The Dallas Post reporting an increase in voluntary appropriations by towns and school districts to the Back Mountain Memorial Library may have been taken by some readers to suggest a county tax to support libraries was either planned or desired by the sources quoted in the article. Information about the size of a tax needed to fund the Back Mountain Memorial Library was included only as a reference with which to compare the library's present funding sources, none of which are direct taxation. The reference to a 1-mill tax was an illustration of how much revenue a tax of that size could produce, not an expression of support for a tax. The winner of the most original category in the Halloween costume contest was misidentified in last week's issue. He is Jesse Shrader, not Jessica Schrader. He portrayed an Indian brave paddling a canoe. PROPERTY TRANSFERS eS The following property deeds were recorded at the Luzerne County Courthouse for the week of David R.
