State playoff action kicks off Tuesday, November 7th with the round of “Sweet 16.” Sixteen teams in both Class AA and AAA will have earned to right to advance to Pennsylva- nia's finale. Only the champion from District 2 moves on, and the Lady Knights will host a fourth- place team from District 3. The “home” game will be played at a yet undetermined field within the District 2 area. It's the first district title for Lake-Lehman field hockey since 1984. The squad, loaded with underclassmen, was thrilled to finally put the jinx to rest. See KINGS, pg. 13 “It's a big rivalry,” said Lehman senior lineman Chris Swire. “It's been along time since we've beaten Dallas and we really want it.” The 48th Old Shoe game will be played at Lake-Lehman’s Edward Edwards Stadium this Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. Playoff positions on line Wyoming Area clinched the Wyoming Valley Conference Divi- sion II title with it’ a win over Meyers last week. Avictoryby the Mountaineers on Saturday allows them to hold onto sole possession of second place. Dallas carries a 8-1 record, 6-1 in the Conference and along with Wyoming and Dunmore, has clinched a District 2, Class AA playoff position. The Mountaineers still have an out- side shot at the number one seed, but first they'll need to knock off the Black Knights. “This year the game means a little more than usual with the playoffs on the line,” said Moun- taineer lineman Dan Podehl. “Some of your friends are over there and it's a tradition. Junior Knight B team advances to "Super Bowl’ The Knight's B-Team and A- Team played their playoff games Sunday, Oct. 29 at Pittston. The B-Team Knights will be in the Super Bowl game next Sunday, Nov. 5. The B-Team started out with the Knights Zach Ragukas kick- ing off to the West Pittston Rams and making the tackle. Chris Nick Stanisheski all had tackles. The Rams scored an early touch- down with the Knights’ Jeff Taylor blocking the extra points. Gaise Lacek received the kick and Chris Teetsel ran a Knights touchdown. In the second quarter the Rams were in possession, fumbled the ball and Galen Waltman recov- ered it. The Rams scored another ouchdown with the Knights locking the extra points. The third quarter began with Gaise Lacek receiving the ball and Chris Teetseland Josh Marth both making a first down for the Knights. In the pouring rain, Chris Teetsel ran a touchdown and scored the extra points for the Knights. The Rams fumbled the ball and the Knights recov- ered it with Chris Teetsel and Josh Marth on the carry. In the fourth quarter, the Rams fumbled the ball again and Chris Teetsel ran the Knights first down. Zach Ragukas made an intercep- tion, and with two minutes left in the game Chris Teetsel made a first down. Zach Ragukas ran another touchdown and scored the extra points for the Knights. The final score for the B-Team was West Pittston Rams 12 - Knights 22. Congratulations B-Team We will see you at the Super Bowl next Sunday. The Knights A-Team took a beating in the first half of the game, with David DeLong getting injured and Jonathan Bird re- ceiving a hard blow. Richard Blaine and Mike Crispell made good tackles with D.J. Harris blocking a Panther pass. The Panthers made a touchdown with the Knights blocking their extra points. Joey Shurmaitis received the ball with Harold Newell and DJ Harris on the carry. Jesse Bixby, Jonathan Bird, and War- ren Vogel had good tackles and the Panthers ran a touchdown that was called back. The second quarter the Pan- thers had the ball, ran a touch- down that was again called back. With two minutes left to halftime the Panthers ran a successful touchdown and scored extra points. In the third quarter Warren Vogel ran the Knights only touchown of the game and brought in the extra points. RJ Krum made a good tackle and Harold Newell caught the ball when kicked with a flag being thrown on the Panthers. Warren Vogel and Troy Long both had a carry. The fourth quarter started out with a penalty on the Panthers. With two min- utes left in the game, the Panthers made another touchdown. A little Old Shoe history The Old Shoe began in 1948, when the Dallas Rotary Club an- nounced: “In a concerted effort to bring Back Mountain commu- nities into closer relationship with one another, Dallas Rotary Club will sponsor a football trophy to be awarded each year to the outstanding football team in the area.” At the time there were still several separate high schools in the region. The first winner was decided by the Thanksgiving Day game between Dallas Township and Kingston Township. Kingston Township came away with a 14-0 win, helped by a touchdown on a Statue of Liberty play. Left end Bob Morgan swung around, took the ball from the quarterback and tossed a 30-yard pass to right end Dick Handley for the score. The bronzed football shoe that is the trophy was suggested by “Rotary hopes by creating this award to develop a stronger com- petitive feeling among Back Mountain teams, and at the same time to help them to know their neighboring communities much better,” said an article in the November 19, 1948 issue of The 48th Old Shoe Game looks like even match Black Knights in district soccer final By LEN KRYESKI Sports Writer The Lake-Lehman boys’ soccer team advanced to the District 2 Class AA championship game with an overtime victory over top- seeded Bishop Hoban Monday night at Wyoming Valley West Stadium in Kingston. The 3-2 victory improves the Black Knights' record to 8-8-2. Lehman will play Meyers (13- 3-1) for the district champion- ship, Thursday night at 8 p.m. at Valley West Stadium. Phil Snyder scored the decid- ing goal at 6:46 of the first over- time period. Snyder booted in a goal off his own rebound after Carr's 25 years' playing golf. ER TR SR RE RI TEE STN SO OT Carr scores hole-in-one on 17th at Irem Dr. Joseph Carr of Shavertown shot a hole-in-one at Irem Temple Country Club Oct. 25. Carr used an 8 iron for the ace, on the 17th hole, which was playing at about 150 yards. His playing partner, Dr. Keith Ferrell, witnessed the shot. Both golf- ers' tee shots were close to the pin, and they didn't know which was in the hole until identifying the ball. It was the first ace in receiving a pass from teammate Mike Colletti. Ryan Bombick put Lehman of the scoreboard first with an unas- sisted goal early in the second period. Snyder scored his first goal of the night following a pen- alty kick in the third period. Scoring has been a perplexing problem all season long as the Knights scored three goals for just the third time this season. After losing four of their last five regu- lar season games, three via shut- out, the Knights appear to be peaking at the right time. Lehman defeated Nanticoke Area 2-1 at home on Saturday to set up Monday night's matchup with the Argents. John Slaby claims local prize in Power Point contest John Slaby of Dallas was the local winner in the ninth week of the 1995 Power Points football contest. His score of 104 points topped all local entries. Slaby will receive $25 cash from The Dallas Post and a free month of HBO from Tele-Media, the contest co-sponsor. The statewide winner, with 127 of a possible 136 points was Shirley Raffensberger of Mount Union. The 60-year-old widowed grandmother is retiring Friday, so she’ll put the prize money to good use. The statewide top prize is $1,000 cash. The Power Points contest will run until the end of the NFL regu- lar season. Entries must be de- posited by 2 p.m. Fridays at either the office of The Dallas Post at 45 Main Road in Dallas, or Tele-Media on the Harveys Lake Highway. SPORTS SHORTS Punt, Pass Kick set for Nov. 4 The Kingston Township Recreation Commission has re-scheduled the Punt, Pass and Kick Competition for November 4, at 10 a.m. at the Center Street Park in Shavertown. Tropies will be awarded in the 7-9, 10-11, and 12-13 age groups. Registration will be prior to the event. The competition is open to the residents of Kingston Township only.
