a. Rk - Mountaineers win ‘game of the year' 37-36 Section 2 Wednesday, October 11, 1995 By LEN KRYESKI Sports Writer The Dallas Mountaineers’ dra- matic 37-36 victory over Meyers Friday night is certainly some- thing every person involved with the Dallas football program can be proud of. Friday's contest was arguably the finest Wyoming Valley Con- ference game in years. It was the first in-conference game decided by the PIAA's new overtime rule for high school play. Dallas showed the savvy to put together a third quarter scoring drive that took over seven minutes off the clock and the ability to score under pressure with time winding down in the fourth quarter. Dallas remained perfect after six games while knocking Meyers from the ranks of the undefeated. They beat an explosive, more experienced Mohawk team on their newly-carpeted artificial turf. No matter how desperate the situation or circumstance, the Mounts continuously bounced back. The Dallas. fans cheered vigorously from the opening kick- off through Jeff Kunkle's game- winning extra point. The band, bandfront, cheerleaders and the Mountaineer mascot, like their team, never seemed to tire. Proud? Most definitely. Happy? You betcha’. Satisfied? Not yet; there's too much football left to play. “We'll be back on the practice field Monday,” assistant coach Tony Chiaruccisaid just moments after the victory. “We can’t let-up. Nanticoke is next and that’s not going to be easy.” Tied at 24, Dallas began the overtime session on offense. On fourth and one, Ted Jackson Jr. scored on a quarterback keeper. With two weeks of regular-season play remaining, both teams are aiming for a sec- ond place finish and a playoff spot. The first place Comets of Abington Heights own a four game lead over the teams in second and seemingly have all but won the division. Lehman looked sharp from the outset Saturday and controlled the ball over the first two periods. Most of the first half was played in Dallas territory. After narrowly missing a shot at an open goal in the first period, Lehman took the lead at 6:19 of the second quarter, when Phil Snyder booted a Mark Steele pass into the left corner of the net from 18 yards out. Just over five minutes later Charles Snyder knocked in the eventual game winning goal, unassisted, at 11:32. Dallas keeper Fred Maier left the goal to retrieve the ball but collided with Snyder as well as teammate Eric George. Snyder jumped up first, eyed the open net and recorded his 11th goal of the season. “I got a pass on the outside, but the grass was really thick so I had to go towards (the net),” said Charles Snyder. “Somebody was See SOCCER, pg. 13 POST PHOTOS/JACK JONES In top photo, Lehman's Jeremy Baranowski (11), slid in front of Ned Friar to control the ball.
