DALLAS TOWNSHIP-When {- Judy Rimple became president - of the Anthracite Scenic Trails i Association (ASTA), she just ~~wanted to help create a place where people could enjoy the beautiful Back Mountain scen- erywhile taking a pleasant walk to Kingston or Harveys Lake. She wasn't looking for any awards. + - -But Thursday she will be one of the people honored at Wilkes University with an En- vironmental Partnership Award. . + Recognizing individuals’ and organizations’ contributions to environmental protection or censervation in Northeastern Pennsylvania, the awards are presented each year by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council, Wilkes University, the Economic Development Coun- cil, the World Future Society and Proctor & Gamble Paper Products. In 1993 Rimple and ASTA began working on the first leg of a walking and bicycling traii | Rimple will receive environmental award which will eventually cover 47 miles of abandoned railroad grades between Luzerne and Dushore. The first two-mile section between Luzerne and Carverton Road, Trucksville, was introduced to the public this spring. She credits her “wonderful board of directors” and the as- sociation’s 175 members with many hours of dedicated work. “The award is actually for them, not for me,” she said. Rimple moved to the Back Mountain from Colorado 5 1/2 years ago. “It's beautiful out there, with the deep green ever- greens and golden aspens con- trasting with the vivid blue sky,” she said. “But we're fortunate here in Pennsylvania to have one of the world’s best fall foli- age displays. The colors take my breath away.” Describing herselfasan “avid recreationalist,” Rimple said she isn't into power walking or mountain biking over rough terrain. She's out to enjoy the scenery. A $50,000 federal matching grant (the feds pay 80 percent and ASTA chips in the rest) has Judy Rimple, shown on the site of the "Rails to Trails" project, will be honored with an Environmental Partnership Award. enabled ASTA to hire engineer Chris Borton to begin design work on the trail, which should be finished by the spring, Rimple said. To help fund its share, ASTA has raised more than $10,000: $4,000 in grants from area state legislators, $1,400 from a prize raffle and $5,000 in pledges from members. “We had between 15 and 20 members pledge $150 apiece,” Rimple said. “We were also pleased to receive donations from students at the Dallas Middle School and GAR High School in Wilkes-Barre.” The Environmental Partner- ship Awards will be presented October 5 at the Dorothy Dickson Darte Performing Arts Center at Wilkes University.
