College Misericordia Meolcomes Albert Bernt Anderson, Ph. D. The Board of Trustees at College Misericordia has named Albert Bernt Anderson, Ph. D., of Plymouth, Minnesota, as the interim president of College Misericordia. Dr. Anderson will begin a two-year term as interim president on Monday, July 10. Since 1990, Dr. Anderson has served as director of the Restoration and ‘Endowment Fund, Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis, and as managing partner of Anderson/Swenson, Inc., a consultant firm specializing in strategic planning, management and funding, located in Minneapolis. Dr. Anderson also has served as vice president and director ofdevelopment, planning and administration at the University of Minnesota/Foundation; as director of development for the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs; as vice president for institutional advancement at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa; as president of Lenoir-Rhyne College, Hickory, North Carolina; as provost of the Tri-College University in Fargo, North Dakota and Moorhead, Minnesota; and as a professor of philosophy at various colleges in Minnesota. His degrees include a Ph.D. from Harvard University, a master of arts degree from the University of Minnesota, a master of divinity degree from Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, and a bachelor of arts degree from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota. Dr. Anderson has published many articles on philosophy and religion, and has completed a book, on the ethics of fund raising, to be published next year by the Indiana University Press. He also has received numerous fellowships and scholarships, including the Danforth Teaching Fellowship, and has been chosen for membership in the American Council of Learned Societies. Sister Maureen McCann, RSM, President of the Sisters of Mercy Dallas Regional Community, Said the Sisters, who founded Misericordia in 1924 and sponsor the College, are pleased to welcome Dr. Anderson to Misericordia. "We are delighted by the appointment of Dr. Albert Anderson as interim president,” Sister McCann, RSM, said. "We believe that he can further the mission of the College by moving Misericordia from its present point of growth to a new level of excellence in higher education.” : College Misericordia Into the 21st Century Recent Accomplishments College Misericordia’s purpose is to educate in a values based environment. In 1994-1995: @® 356 students graduated (largest class to date) @® 22 undergraduate majors, 6 master’s degrees @ 164 full and part time faculty Since 1990 we have: @® Increased our enrollment by 50%. @® Maintained a student/faculty ratio of 14:1. @® Continued a retention rate of 90% (national average - 55-70%). @® Maintained a Placement rate of over 90%. Misericordia, working toward a strong future: 1988 - Renovation of Science Building completed. 1992 - Completed construction of 12 town houses for student living. 1993 - Dedicated Anderson Sports-Health Center. and new Anderson athletic fields. 1994 - Dedicated Gildea Student Residence Hall. 1994 - Sponsored Ethics Institute which seeks to promote understanding of ethical issues in business, government, politics, health care and society. @® 1994 -Re-established Institute of Law and Religious Life which provides education and professional. development for women in leadership in religious life. ® 1994 - Sponsored the Diversity Institute which seeks to promote mulicultural understanding and appreciation. Misericordia and the Community ® The Anderson Sports-Health Center offers community swim and exercise programs. @ Students volunteer in soup kitchens, Adopt-a-Grandparent program, and care for the homeless; organize children’s parties; work with underprivileged youth; help the poor in Appalachia and in the Bronx. @® The Accounting Club offers help with tax returns to low income community members. @® Extensive, high-quality art and cultural events programming is free or requires a nominal fee, and is open to the public; includes McDonald Art Gallery, Theatre-On-The-Green, Madrigal, Musica Misericordia, and Choral Society Misericordia Tomorrow As we move toward the 21st century, the outlook for future growth is positive and exciting. Innovative programs in health care, education, liberal arts, and business have revitalized the campus. Additional continuing education programs designed to enable adult students to return to college have been added to the present curriculum. Most important is Misericordia’s continuing commitment to provide quality education to prepare its students for a lifetime of learning, community service and success in their careers.
