8 Back Mountain _ibrary Auction Dallac.’A July 5,1995 a Antiques block is chock full Antiques chairman Ernie Ashbridge and his committee have accumulated so many items for sale across the block that they have run out of storage room. “I can’t move in there,” he said. “It's a great selection this year.” Committee members Betty Ashbridge, Maryann Dailey, Leslie Horoschco and William Gable have worked hard to prepare and organize everything. The antiques include a Hoosier cabinet, trunks, tool chests, a signed Tiffany vase and a signed Galle vase, a piece of Victorian art glass known as a Burmese cruet, a re- burnished brass umbrella stand, five Tiffany-type lamps and shades, hand- stitched quilts, an ornate wrought-iron parrot cage with a stand, lots of cut and pressed glass items, marble top tables and lots of wicker. She's secretary of the library board and at the auction helps on the block, tracks the antique sales, keeps totals, works with the chairman and heads of the committees and “helps out wherever I'm needed.” She's even called in the Marines, who for the past three years have helped carry out the thousands of books and other items to the booths the day before the auction. “Some of us have been around the library for a long time, so people often ask us for advice,” she said. “The library and the auction are a big part of my life and are very important to me.” Although the auction happens only once a year, the board and volunteers work year-round to keep the library going, whether it’s the nuts and bolts tasks with paperwork and books or raising funds. The work never stops - it's a constant effort, Mrs. Kutz said. “It’s what our country is all about — the community working together. I'm proud of it.” Pauline Kutz All-around library volunteer “For example, we need more room for the children,” she said. “Theyre the community's most important asset. The children’s room is very crowded.” When the library purchased the building, once the Dallas Borough Elementary School, the board wanted to use the entire building, Mrs. Kutz said. But as plans and renovations progressed, it became obvious that complying with federal guidelines would be extremely expensive. For example, an elevator would be needed to provide wheelchair access to the basement and second floor. The board decided to renovate the main floor and rent out the second floor to a day 4 N Eat in or Take Out » Try Our Wings! Further building and renovations projects have expanded storage space for the antiques and added a community room for other activities. The auction, which raises a significant portion of the library's funding, is rather unusual, Mrs. Kutz said. “It's difficult to keep an all-volunteer fundraiser going continuously for nearly 50 years, especially today,” she said. “It’s not easy to put in a full day’s work, then go work at the library for several hours after dinner. It's very important that the community remembers us.” She commended the library and its board for having enough foresight to plan for the future and to make the best use of resources while spending money conservatively. “The library and the auction are a unique piece of Americana,” she said. “It's what our country is all about — the community working together.
