Phils bomb A's 22-8 behind Katyl's 5 hits By LEN KRYESKI Sports Writer _ DALLAS TOWNSHIP - The Phil- lies improved to 13-3 on the sea- son by pounding the Athletics 22- 8 in Back Mountain major league action Monday. The Phils banged out 25 hits, led by Josh Katyl's five, during the victory at W.W. Kubis Field. After jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the victors scored six more on seven hits while sending 11 players to the plate in the second. The big blows were a triple by Colin Don- nelly and Katyl's two run homer that easily cleared the fence in left. Josh Sutton drew a walk with one out and scored on Donnelly’s triple. Nathan Carsman singled home a run and scored on Katyl's blast which chased losing pitcher Mike Dombroski from the mound. After winning pitcherJohn Slaby popped out to third, consecutive singles by Keith Sprau, T.C. Har- ding, Joel Lesivski and Tim Persico accounted for two more runs. Slaby allowed only two hits, struck out the side in the second and seven total in just three in- nings of work. He cruised through the first two innings by only allow- ing only one runner to reach base via an error. Then, the A's scored four times in the bottom of the third. With one out Adam Brown drew the first walk off Slaby and Adam Tkacyzk reached on an error by the hurler. Both scored when Jeff Dickson ripped a triple to right. Paul Saxon singled home Dickson and later scored on a wild pitch. Donnelly pitched the fourth and fifth for the Phillies and allowed two runs on two hits, struck out five and walked two. The A's touched Carsman, who closed the By LEN KRYESKI Sports Writer When Jen Smith heard the news, she was so happy she al- most started to cry. The junior second baseman from College Misericordia was recently named to the East Re- gion all star team by the National Softball Coach's Association. She made history in the process, be- coming the first softball player from Misericordia to be so hon- ored. “I almost started to cry,” Smith recalled of learning the news. “I was surprised and really didn't think I would be named to the team. Our school really needs the recognition.” “That's very, very special for her,” said Misericordia softball coach Charlotte Slocum. “It doesn’t matter how many more of our players accomplish that feat - she set a record. She's the only one who can say that I did it first.” The Sweet Valley native and former Lake-Lehman standout picked up plenty of other hard- ware and honors for her perform- ance on the field this past spring. She was the logical choice to re- ceive the team's most valuable player award by leading the Cou- gars in nine offensive categories. Along the way, Jen established Misericordia season records for runs scored (57), home runs (11) and runs batted in (68). She also paced the team in batting average (.479), hits (58), stolen bases (11), on base percentage (.519), total bases (107), and slugging per- centage (.884). For the third consecutive year Jen was named to the Pennsylva- nia Athletic Conference All-Star team and was the only repeat selection on this year's Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Division III Southern all-star squad. The Cougars finished the sea- son 27-12. It’s the second time in school history that the softball team has won 27 games, their second highest total, but that's game, for two runs on two hits in = the sixth. The Phillies scored four in the third off Tkacyzk plus four in the fourth and five in the sixth off Dickson. Katyl went 5-for-5 with a walk, three doubles, and a home run. He accounted for eight runs by driv- ing home four and scoring four more. Sprau added four hits and scored three runs while Slaby and Persico added three hits a piece. Carsman reached base all three times he came to the plate with two singles and a walk and managed to score all three times. Richard Eckman went 2-for-2, scored a run and drove home two after coming off the bench. Saxon paced the Athletic attack with two hits and scored two runs. C. J. Adamchak went 2-for-4 with asingleand adouble while Dickson scored {wo runs. Major Leaague roundup PHILLIES 12 - PIRATES 1 John Slaby led the Phillies with three hits including two doubles and Joel Lesinski added a pair of doubles for the win over the Pi- rates. Winning pitcher Josh Katyl fired a two hitter with 14 strike- outs, while only walking two. Katyl also had two hits for the Phils along with teammate Keith Sprau. Lloyd Droppers and Tyler Drop- pers had the lone hits for the Pirates, a double and triple re- spectively. DODGERS 7 - GIANTS 1 The Dodgers helped tighten the National League standings with timely hitting and solid defense. Colin McHale had two singles while Stephen Moyer, Kyle Tomek and Chris Coslett had doubles. The Giants J.B.Bucha and Matt Eyet hit doubles for their cause. Moyer went the distance striking out 10 Giants while giving up five hits and three walks. Pitching the first three innings, Mike Domzal- ski struck out eight batters for the Giants. GIANTS 17 - ORIOLES 3 Winning pitcher Justin DiGuiseppe teamed with Dan Mulhern to defeat the Orioles. Dan Mulhern hit his first homerun of the season. Multiple hitters for the Giants were Justin DiGuiseppe with four hits, J.B. Bucha, Jared Karalunas, Jimmy Belles with three hits and Charlie Stajewski had two. Tim Banks, Ed Krasnack and John Krispin banged out two hits each for the Orioles. GIANTS 11, ASTROS 8 (7 innings) The Giants scored six runs in the fifth inning en route to a 8-8 tie after regulation play and scored three unanswered runs in the seventh inning. Winning pitcher for the Giants was Dan Mulhern with Eric Walasek earning the save. David Walters pitched well for the Astros striking out nine batters while only walking two. J.B. Bucha, Jimmy Belles, Eric Walasek and Dan Mulhern allhad two hits for the victors. Rickey Branco, Wally Karl, Chip Harri- son and Joe Yankoski each had two hits for the Astros. GIANTS 7 - RANGERS 3 In the much anticipated show- down between division leaders, the National League Giants de- feated the American League Rang- ers 7-3. Jim Belles’ run-scoring triple highlighted the Giants first in- ning. But the Rangers, keyed by Frank Martino's clutch two-out RBI single, grabbed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first with four hits off starting pitcher Mike Domzalski. The Giants tied the game in the third when Domzalski singled with Brian Downey stabbed a shot down the first base line in Little League action last week. Still, she's managed to make the all-PAC three consecu- tive years at three different posi- tions. Jen was chosen as a first baseman during her freshman campaign and as a center fielder last year. “Second base is my favorite position,” Smith said. “I'm good in the outfield, but I like second the best because I like to get alot of action.” Slocum was more than satis- fied with Jen's play at second and was elated over the number of would-be base stealers picked off this year. She believes the Cou- gars probably also set a record for runners picked off this season and much of the credit goes to Smith and Cathy Valonis, the team’s starting catcher. Smith's batting average is .448 over three seasons at the college level and can be attributed toa lot of hard work and determination. “I had too much of a big base- ball swing when I got here,” Smith said. “The coaches broke the swing dowmard really helped'meiibhad to do a lot of hitting off of the machine.” It's easier to maintain a batting eye during the summer months by playing for various teams. This year Jen plans to play in a church league by representing the Com- munity Bible Church in Sweet Valley and play some fast pitch in a very competitive league in the Allentown area. During the winter she stays in shape by working hard in the weight room plus coaching and playing basketball. She had hoped to do well going into the 1995 season, but was pleasantly surprised by the offen- sive numbers she put up. The Misericordia coaching staff wasn't surprised. “Knowing Jen, I just knew she would have the type of season she did,” Slocum said. “She is a fine example of what a true athlete is and she gives on 110 percent all the time. She is just a super individual for us.” Slocum said the keys to Jen's batting prowess are her consis- tency and good eye for the ball. Jen can handle any type of pitch or pitcher with relative ease be- cause she simply doesn’t swing at bad pitches. Smith normally bats third or fourth in the lineup, al- lowing her more chances to drive home runs. “If you had a batter you would like to have coming to bat with the bases loaded, it would be her,” Slocum stated. “If we ask her to lay down a bunt, she will do it and Jen is one of our fastest runners on base. A smart, heads-up run- ner.” It appears Jen will remain at second base for her senior “season ... voee SMITH, pg 10 IO CHB CRO TCT RSI ETE GAMES: 94 AT BATS: 228 2B: 16 3B: 9 RBI: 118 SO: 14 PUTOUTS: 254 ASSISTS: 96 HITS: 129 AVG.: 448 HR: 14 RUNS: 111 BB: 24 SAC: 13 ERR: 17 FLDG.%: .954 SportsShorts Renegades soccer tryouts June 8 The Back Mountain Renegades boys travel soccer team will hold tryouts for the 1995-1996 season June 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. and June 10, from noon to 2 p.m. at Penn State Campus, Lehman.
