By VALERIE WOLFE Student Correspondent Recently, Lake-Lehman ninth graders in language art classes learned the steps to publishing a book. For a graded project, their teacher, Miss Purcell, asked 90 students to choose an appropri- ate subject they were interested in and develop a book. . The freshman authors started off by developing an idea that would make an impact. The most popular categories were fiction, sports and “how to”. '. After the students chose a main topic and category, they had to select a responsible person to be in charge of editing their book. The students then spent many hours in Lake-Lehman's writing center. There, the students learned how to create and design graphics to use for their book cover. They also vigorously typed their stories at the computers. After the word processing was completed, layout and paste up took place. Finally, the students concluded the book making proj- ect by binding their books to- gether and exhibiting the pieces of literature in the high school library. To make the experience more exciting, Miss Purcell turned the project into a contest with cash prizes. The books were judged on overall appeal, interest level, idea focus and development, language usage, and creativity. The six judges comprised of three students and three faculty members chose the following: first place, Michelle Boltz with a book of poetry called Straight From The Heart; second place, Kristina O’Kane’s Kids All Over the World, 9th graders learn about books by making them and third place, Tara Haughney with a children’s book illustrated with her own line drawings. Honorable mentions included Josh Chollack’s Hot Rods, which featured a cover of homemade paper; Joe Paculavich's Yankees Baseball, and Mike Hollos, Bass Fishing. Hillary Pilosi, an honorable mention winner for her book titled What About Me?, wrote a book about alittle girl who feels ignored and runs away. Hillary said, “The project was fun. I learned how much time goes into actually producing a book.” Back Mountain students earn King's College degrees "Back Mountain area students ‘were among the over 400 gradu- atesat the 1995sprin, _~mence- ment held in May at King's Col- lege, Wilkes-Barre.
