HARVEYS LAKE - The police officer .on the graveyard shift re- ceived an unwelcome surprise when he came on duty Sunday night. - He was grounded. . The inspection stickers on two of the borough's three cruisers expired at midnight and the third car was at a nearby garage having some lettering finished. “It didn't create any problems,” said mayor Rick Boice Monday afternoon. “Officer Karlonis, who ‘was on duty for that shift, and Chief Bulford went up to the ga- rage at 11 p.m. and brought the about it.” Normally only one man works each of the two night shifts, he added. The white cruiser was inspected Monday, but the four-wheel-drive cruiser needs some repairs before it will pass inspection, Boice said. “Even if a cruiser wasn't avail- able, the borough's insurance would have covered the personal car of the officer on duty if he'd had to use it,” he added. Chief Bulford is responsible for making sure all police vehicles are inspected, Boice said. He wasn't sure if a police officer driving a cruiser with an expired inspection sticker would be able to write himself a ticket or if he'd | Drive, Dallas Twp., $30,000. “ston Twp., $25,000. gray cruiser back to the police have to get a state trooper to do it station. Fresh Air Fund seeks host families for inner-city kids The Fresh Air Fund, an inde- pendent, not-for-profit agency which sends over 7,000 inner- city children on free summer vacations to suburban and coun- try host families in 13 northeast- ern states, is looking for families to open their hearts and homes for two weeks or more to New York City children. Last year, 17 fami- lies hosted children in Dallas. Fresh Air Fund youngsters are boys and girls between six to 12 years old. Most host fmilies enjoy their young guests so much that over 60% of the children return to visit the same family year after year, creating memories that last a lifetime. Host families are selected by volunteer committee members. Members of the Dallas committee approve hosts after reviewing their applications, visiting their homes and checking thier personal ref- erences. There are no financial require- ments for hosting a child. Most hosts simply want to share their homes with less fortunate chil- dren. Host families may request boys or girls and the approximate age of their Fresh Air child. The Fund also has a unique program for placing children who have special emotional or physi- cal needs with host families. If you are interested in becom- ing a Fresh Air Fund host or vol- unteering your time, please call Karen Duncan at 696-4245 or Mary Lou Deisroth at 717-788- 2460.
