Doctors told Jonelle that she might not be able to have a junior field hockey season because of two broken vertebrae in her neck. Jonelle's coach, Mrs. Lipski, felt ‘badly about the unfortunate acci- dent. She and members of the Lake-Lehman field hockey team ‘were looking forward to having this talented player shine through for their team. “Jonelle had all the right makings for a goalie. She is intelligent, understands angles, agile, and possesses dedication. Before the accident occurred, Jonelle was patiently waiting to gain the varsity goalie spot,” said Mrs. Lipski. It was a long struggle because this once active girl was now limited to almost no activities. For six months, Jonelle was inca- pable of doing even the simplest things. The reality of not playing hockey in her junior year hit when there were few weeks left in the season and Jonelle's doctors told her that the bones still did not recover all the way. Disappointed, Jonelle put all her energy into two months of rigorous therapy. Still unable to use her neck fully, Jonelle used therapy to strengthen her other muscles that had been weakened. Finally, after eight long months of struggle, Jonelle's doctors released PHOTO BY TARA WATSON Fully recovered from accident injuries, Jonelle Elgeway Is one step away from the Junior Olympic field hockey team. her from all restrictions. Now, this star field hockey goalie not only has gained her full ability to play, but she has earned out- standing honor.
