The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, December 14, 1994 5 Da a il John W. Johnson - This week's column is a series of ideas from my notebook, not 3 ‘necessarily in their order of im- ‘portance. . —Did you know that 9.5 mil- “lion dollars in the new so-called ‘crime bill will go to heroin inter- "diction and related heroin issues. . Did you also know that only 500 persons died last year from using heroin. Not a very good cost- benéfit ratio, huh. And why we, in fact, taking all the so-called drug ny war money and simply buying all O the drugs with that money and destroying them. We pay farmers not to grow crops. Why not pay drug growers not to sell them ‘other than to the government? —If Social Security doesn't adopt a means test soon, then your hopes of ever collecting from ‘ther system will be laughable. -' —When will we understand and accept that, primarily because of @ women and teenagers in the workplace, greater extremes of prosperity and recession have now ‘become permanent fixtures in the American economy? In short, there are only so many consum- ers and only so many jobs. (Par- enifietically, many of the women More notes from all over now in the workforce would have been. In years past, the one good teacher all of us remembered from childhood....yes?) —Why are clean jokes and dirty air not mutually exclusive; rather collectively tolerable? —How about permitting some welfare recipients to earn money? The prohibition against earning. money is a disincentive to get off " welfare. —When is someone going to invent a good $5 wiper blade...and a good $5,000 car to put it on? —When is someone going to make it a felony for a person to do a year's worth of banking busi- ness at a drive-up window? —Let junk mail and junk phone calls be forced to pay its fair share in proportion to its uninvited in- trusion into our lives. —When will someone invent a fluorescent light fixture that doesn’t think it's a part of an acappella chorus with all that humming? —And how about a no-iron fabric that will not also melt when within 100 yards of a heat source? —Rather than term limits for Congress, let's just require them to win by a higher percentage of the vote each time they are elected, and to give back their salaries if cost/benefit studies prove money is being wasted. —When will we stop saying “cream please” for our coffee, when everyone on the planet knows you're going to get milk? —If we banned beer mugs, do you really think that people will stop drinking? Then why not permit clean needles to be given to drug addicts to stop the spread of AIDS? —When are we going to care ‘not one red cent’ that the nui- sance cent coin should be elimi- nated? —Michael Jackson marries Lisa Marie because he'sinlove.....right. —When will those drivers, who fail to indicate a turn until five feet from the spot, have their homes infected with locusts? —When are we going to stop making plastic milk jugs, juice boxes, straws and other such environmentally unfaithful items? —It’s true that George Bush's presidency was, in large part, a failed one...but that had as much to do with the fact that he was a gentleman as it did he was incom- petent. —When are parents going to obey the law (not to mention ob- serve common sense) by putting young children in car seats? —When is the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania going to stop this incredible nonsense of nuisance taxes, have a statewide reassess- ment of property, and provide some equity, common sense and rational behavior to our tax col- lection sytem? —When is the international Olympic Committee going to stop the farce that the Olympic Games are amateur athletic events, and just let the best athletes in the world show up and see who wins? —And when is American edu- cation going to wake up. More than 700,000 of students who graduate this year will not be able to read the diploma they are handed. Library news Celebrating " "The Book Club of the Back ‘Mountain Memorial Library will hold its Christmas Tea on Mon- day, December 19 at 1:30 in the reading room at the library. Rev. &@ Loren Swartz of Pittston will pres- ent a program on stained glass windows at 2 p.m. following a short ‘business meeting. A Christmas ‘musical interlude will be presented at 2:30 by Paul Zanelli of Dallas and, his synthesizer. There will be group singing of Christmas carols also, accompanied by the synthe- ‘sizer. Members and friends are invited toattend this special Christ- ® ‘mas program. The library Christmas open hpuse will be held on Tuesday, December 21, from 1 to 4 in the afternoon. Cookies, candy, coffee and punch will be served. Mem- bers of the community are invited to come to the library and enjoy some refreshments with the library staff at this festive time of the year. ‘Take a break from your schedule and relax and enjoy some refresh- Christmas at the library ments and sharing at this wonder- ful time of the year. New books at the library: “Towing Jehovah” by James Mor- row is a novel to entertain and and provoke both science fiction and mainstream fiction audiences alike. As he rings his wild, Von- negutian changes on male chau- vinism, oil companies, Darwin, junk food, World War II buffs, the Catholic Church, joyless rational- ism, and Cecil B. DeMille, the author also manages to include some of the beauty and sorrow of the world. A luminous story. “Time and Time Again” by Den- nis Danvers is the story of Marion Mead, a 42-year-old widow, rais- ing two young stepdaughters on her own. She is a woman with an extraordinary imagination who has often been accused of getting lost in her imaginings—an attribute that in no small way accounts for her success as a promising novel- ist. In her newest book, however, her identification with her heroine begins to border on obsession. A powerful story. “Once Upon a Time” by John Barth is a memoir wrapped in a novel and launched on a sea voy- age. A cutter-rigged sloop sets sail for an end-of-the-season cruise down into the “Chesapeake Tri- angle.” The captain; a middle aged writer of some repute. The sole crewmate; his lover, friend, editor and wife. The journey turns out to ‘be not the modest three-day cruise it at first seems. The narrator navigates among the waypoints of his life. “The Plague Makers” by Jeffrey A. Fisher is shocking in its revela- tions, alarming in its implications, and overwhelmingly convincing in the evidence it offers. It warns of impending disaster. Countless infectious diseases previously considered under control have suddenly re-emerged and may soon reach epidemic proportions, plung- ing the world into a plague of misery and death unlike anything seen in over half a century. This is a riveting narrative. Thanks! Dallas students cheered Hampton House Editor: The residents and staff of Hamp- ton House Nursing Center wish to > take this opportunity to thank the art students of Dallas Senior High School and their teacher, Claire Morris, for donating their time and talents at our facility. Now our windows are painted with festive holiday scenes which add to the spirit of the season! At a time of year that is often depressing and lonely for our resi- dents, it is nice to know that there are caring individuals who are willing to take the time to show compassion for those who are less fortunate. Our residents enjoyed watching the activity and interact- ing with the young artists (Rap music and alll). Hopefully the students will real- ize how much their visit meant to all of us. Please call on us again! Judy Slocum Hampton House Activities Director Q: Where do you find the most Back Mountain news each week?
