By LYNN OLDHAM Sports Writer Lake-Lehman may not be a powerhouse team like those that the Dallas Mountaineers will meet in state playoffs beginning this week, but they sure gave Dallas a workout last Saturday in the ‘Old Shoe’ game at Dallas. The Moun- taineers won the contest 19-0. After a hard hit on the kickoff return, Dallas's Frank Valvano fumbled and Lehman recovered at the Dallas 30-yard-line. Their drive was cut short, however, when Matt Williams intercepted the ball on fourth-and eight and ran the ball back to the Dallas 35-yard line. Seniors Buddy Rhodes and Rich Butcofski advanced the ball on this first drive, but Dallas was forced to punt when defensive tackle Dave Thomas sacked Mount quarterback Ted Jackson for a loss of seven. Tim Waslick received the Adam Hoover punt and brought the ball back to the Lehman 40, stepping through some would-be Mount tacklers along the way. Quarter- back Mike Woronko, who was starting in place of injured John Oliver, continually looked to run- ning back Mike Pitcavage, who gave Lehman a first down, but the Dallas defensive line kept him from repeating that performance. Lehman was forced to punt from its own 45-yard-line. The Mountaineers used the “I thought Rich Gorgone’s kids were well prepared and they gave us a hell of a game.” Ted Jackson Dallas head coach rushing talents of Rhodes, But- cofski and Mike Viglone in their next drive, but the Dallas offense only amassed 14 yards and one first down before being forced to punt. When the first quarter ended, both teams were score- less. “We started off a little slow, but that's a tribute to Lehman. Lehman played real well. They had some problems and injuries. I thought Rich Gorgone's kids were well prepared and they gave us a hell of a game," said Dallas coach Ted Jackson. On the Dallas punt, Hoover bumbled the snap twice, losing yardage each time, but still man- aged to get off the kick with a half dozen Black Knights in his face. Again Woronko looked to Pitcav- age to advance the ball, but the Mount defense was ready for him and forced fourth down and six yards to go. Mike Adamshick went back to punt for Lake- Lehman. On the punt return, Viglone didn’t gain much yardage before a host of Knights tackled him. A Jackson pass to Butcofski gave the Mounts a first down and be- gan the momentum which would lead to the only touchdown of the half. Viglone hauled in a pass from Jackson at the Lehman 46- yard-line, and was brought down by Waslick, but not before the Mounts had gained 30 yards on the play. Rhodes fought the Black Knight defense for the next first down and was brought down hard by a number of Lehman defenders. The Lehman defense continued their fine play as Brad Bittenbender kept Rhodes to two yards on the next play and Waslick broke up a pass intended for Viglone. The next pass to Viglone was com- plete, however, and Dallas had another first down at the Lehman 20-yard-line. Rhodes and Bitten- bender clashed again and Dallas gained two on the play. Waslick and Woronko broke up a pass to Kunkle in the end zone, forcing third down, but when Jackson was forced out of the Dallas quarterback Ted Jackson, Jr. lets one go during the Old Shoe Game. Jackson ran for one touchdown and passed for another. pocket, he broke a Pitcavage tackle and ran for 17 yards into the end zone with a few Black Knights on his heels. Kunkle kicked the extra point, and it was good. Dallas led the game 7-0 with about 3:00 left in the half. On the kickoff return, Pitcav- age fielded the ball at the four- yard-line and advanced it to 19 using fancy footwork and great balance after being hit several times. He then took the handoff from Woronko for a gain of three. Woronko then faked a handoff to Pitcavage and faded back to pass to Waslick, but Rich Klick was there for the coverage and tipped the ball away. Pitcavage then ran for six yards, only one short of the first down and the Black Knights were forced to punt on fourth down from their own 28. “Mike (Pitcavage) ran hard. He did a nice job.
