WVC opponents of the Dallas High School football team watched helplessly as the Moun- taineers dominated one of the most competitive football conferences in the state of Pennsylvania in 1993, winning the WVC Division II and District 2 Class AA champi- onships. Then it was the eastern half of the state who stared in amaze- ment, watching as a ferocious Dallas defense shut down high- powered Bermudian Springs, 14- 7, in the Eastern Pennsylvania championship game. Finally, it was the entire state which stood up and took notice of the Mountaineers as Dallas beat J & J Deli "Catering for any Occasion” 659 Memorial Hwy., Dallas, PA « 675-6139 (Owned & Operated by Jim & Jan Wertman) Football Fans Try our 16" Hoagies, Buffalo Wings, Homemade Salads, for Your Next Tailgate Party DALLAS FOOTBALL up, tore up and shut up Washing- ton High School, 31-7, to capture the PIAA Class AA state champi- onship. Unfortunately for them, oppo- nents of the Dallas football team could expect more of the same this season. Gone are all-state performers quarterback Brian Brady and of- fensive /defensive tackle Greg Nadzan. But the Mountaineers return 11 starters from last year's 14-1 state championship team, which held its 15 opponents to just 73 total points (an average of 4.9 ppg). But with the talent comes high expectations, and nobody knows that better than Dallas head coach Ted Jackson. “Nobody's been asking if we’ll win the division, they're asking if we'll win the state championship again,” said Jackson, who enters his 10th season as the head coach of the Mountaineers. “It's tough because people think it’s easy. They don’t know the pressure that comes with a season like that.” Langdon, Dan Podehl, Dean Evans, Aaron Gingo, Rob Kohli, Scott Townsend, Ted Jackson, Jeff Kunkle, Frank Valvano, Jason Henry, Chris Yanik. Dymond was injured during a recent scrimmage and will be sidelined for at least six weeks, which is most of the season. “We've had some bad luck, that's for sure,” said Lipski, who has produced a number of out- standing collegiate players dur- ing her 14 years at the Back Mountain school. “But we're still working hard and we want to have a good season. We knew coming into the season the lack of varsity experience would hurt us. Now, the injuries have taken away some of the players we were counting on.” Judy Sichler, a senior right inner is the lone returning starter from last year's team, which lost to backyard rival Dallas in the district championship. But de- spite the inexperience and inju- ries, Lipski and her charges re- main optimistic. “The girls still have high expec- tations,” said Lipski, who is as- sisted by Sandy Boyle. “They know we have a history of excel- lence at Lehman and they want to be a part of it. I told them if they want to be marginal, they can be marginal. But if they want to be exceptional, they can be excep- tional.” Lipski will be counting on the services of seven seniors, includ- ing Sichler, to lead the Lady Knights. Joining Sichler will be seniors Kelly Komsisky (halfback), Missy Brown (halfback), Amy Rogers (halfback), Jennifer Brit (halfback), Tara Dymond (forward) and Richelle Kovach (wing). Junior Pam Rish is expected to be the team’s starting goalkeeper. The Lehman coach is also ex- cited about a talented sophomore class. “We have a good group of sopho- mores,” said Lipski, who has 35 players on her roster this season. “They're avery talented group and they'll get the opportunity to see some varsity action this season. “Even though they don’t have much experience on the field, these girls know what it takes to win. They played against many of the best players in the conference in practice during the past couple of years. Now, it's their turn.” Russ Major's Sales, Inc.
