LW ® Earns Navy Achievement Medal Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class John M. Westfield, son of Rev. and Mrs. Henry E. Westfield of 90 Claude St., Dallas, recently received the Navy Achievement Medal. Westfield was cited for superior performance of duty while serving as ra patient administration clerk at Naval Medical Clinic, Portsmouth, N.H., where he is currently assigned. Displaying uncommon initiative, Westfield devoted extensive off- duty hours learning complex microcomputer software used to keep » track of patients in the facility. ~~ In response to an increased workload due to early separation of “service members, he catalogued, audited and managed corrective # measures for more than 4,000 physical examinations within a three- Wy “week period. The award, presented during formal ceremonies, is official recogni- tion for Westfield's outstanding accomplishments, initiative and devo- tion to duty. The 1986 graduate of Dallas Senior High school joined the Navy in June 1986. Completes Navy technician's course Navy Airman Apprentice Bradley E. Scott, son of Arthur H. and Ida L. Scott of Harveys Lake, recently completed the Aviation Support Equipment Technician Course. During the course at the Naval Air Training Center, Naval Air Station Memphis, Millington, Tenn., students are trained to inspect, maintain and repair basic hydraulic systems and the operation of automotive electrical systems, power generating equipment and air conditioning systems. Studies also include metal working, corrosion control, oxyacetylene welding, preventive maintenance procedures and troubleshooting techniques. Scott joined the Navy in August 1993. Irem Women to meet Sept. 1 The regular meeting of Irem Women's Auxiliary will be held Septem- ber 1 at Irem Temple Mosque at 1:30 p.m. Please note date changes. Mellon Bank to display works of area artists Sue Hand and Leigh Pawling, two area women who have de- voted their lives to art, will pres- ent an exhibit of their most recent artworks at Sue Hand's Imagery, Dallas, from August 29 through September 3, with an opening reception August 27. Included in the exhibit are many - local landscapes which have been | painted on location, floral and still life paintings and figure stud- ies, completed this past spring and summer. None of the artworks have been previously exhibited. Hand is a nationally recognized artist who paints daily, teaches fine art drawing and painting to students of all ages in her private studio; writes a national quar- terly newsletter for plein air paint- ers and leads a teen artists’ Bible study in addition to many other activities. She is best known for her wa- tercolors, alkyds and ink draw- ings. Her paintings are sold through several galleries in Maine and Hilton Head, South Carolina. Her plein air paintings; mini- atures, and other works are in- cluded in collections around the world. Hand is a member of more than a dozen state, national and inter- national art organizations and is a founding member of the Cider Painters of America and the Penn- sylvania En Plein Air Society. Hand and her husband, Jo- seph, and daughter Heather Hand Madeira have operated their fam- ily art studio in Dallas for nearly 20 years. Pawling, a fine arts graduate of Wittenberg University, resides in New York City and studies at the New York Art Students League with Peter Cox and Michael Bur- ban. Florence, Italy and is represented by Sue Hand's Imagery and by several galleries in the Cayman Islands. She is a signature member of the Pennsyvlania Plein Air Society. She is the daughter of Shep and Corrine Pawling, Dal- as. An opening reception will be held August 27 from 7-9 p.m. at Sue Hand's Imagery, 35 Main Street, Dallas.
