The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, July 20, 1994 3 Harveys Lake through the years Like many other towns of various sizes, Harveys Lake Borough has its share of memorable dates. +1781: According to local legend, the lake was discovered by @cnamn Harvey while trying to find his way back to Wyoming alley after being released by Native Americans fighting for the British in New York. +1887: Timbering and ice operations at the lake and along Bow- man’s Creek toward Mountain Springs and Ricketts flourished. Passenger service on the railroads running between Wyoming Valley and the timbering and ice camps was instituted. During this year the first lake trout were stocked. -1888: The first reported problem of sewage running in the lake is.recorded. Ice harvesters were concerned that it could ruin the ice. & 1891: The picnic grounds not far from Alderson opened, with passenger steamboat service running between the lake's north corner and the hotel district at the Inlet. +1894: The Shawanese Post Office was opened, with summer service. . 1898: Trolley service from Wilkes-Barre was begun. It took only 30 minutes to make the 20-mile run through the West Side to the lake. The Oneonta Hotel at the Inlet opened, transforming Harveys Lake into one of the area’s most fashionable resorts for the rich + 1942: Route 415, the Harveys Lake-Dallas Highway, was dedi- cated. Previously, people drove to the lake over winding roads through Alderson or along Lake Street in Dallas to the Old Lake Road in Idetown. + 1963: The railroad line between Noxen and Dallas was aban- doned, due to the decline in the lumber and ice industries and the closing of the Noxen tannery in 1961. « January, 1968: Harveys Lake Borough was carved out of sections of Lake, Lehman and Dallas townships. The first mayor and council were sworn in January 1 at the Luzerne County courthouse by Justice Benjamin R. Jones, held its first organiza- tional meeting January 2 at the D. C. Roberts Fire Company. + 1972: The Agnes flood in Wyoming Valley forced many to relocate and precipitated sudden development at the lake. by Grace R. Dove Franklin Twp. firefighters help Georgia flood victims By GRACE R. DOVE Post Staff Normally firefighters from Fran- klin Township battle fires. This weekend they will join forces with a trucking company and friends from the community to take on a new enemy — a flood. The fire hall on Orange Road will be open July 23 and 24 to accept donations of cleaning supplies and baby needs for Operation Helping Hands, a drive to aid residents of Bainbridge, Georgia, hit by the worst flooding in the city’s history. “You don’t have to be a Fran- klin Township resident to donate to the drive,” said fire company secretary Debbie Jones. “We wel- come donations from anyone so I know the things that they need,” Williams said, referring to high water on the Susquehanna River during the past two win- ters. “Already we have had offers of help from as far away as Bradford and Susquehanna counties.” Penn's Best Trucking has do- nated the use of a tractor-trailer and driver to move the supplies south, and will donate a second truck if necessary, according to operations manager William Ruark. A Penn's Best employee who is a member of a Methodist church in Springville had originally ap- proached him about helping out, Ruark said. “We did this for victims of Hurricane Hugo in South Caro- PN : _and famous. ; interested in helping out.” lina, Hurricane Andrew in Florida €) @. 1900: The Natoma, the lake's first double-deck steamer, was Firefighters will be on hand and the floods in the Midwest,” : launched. from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. July 23 Ruarksaid. “We always try to help +1912: President Teddy Roosevelt visited the lake. and from 1 to 6 p.m. July 24, out if it's something that we're 1914: The last lumber mill at Alderson was closed.
