NSCs CHET ERR CEN ES Cl The Dallas Post Amid the excitement of the booths, bidding and other auc- tion activities, visitors may have noticed the simple wood-burned sign hanging on a column of the auction block. “The Gary Foltz Auction Block,” it says. Who is Gary Foltz? Around 1986, auction commit- tee members needed someone to build a set of platforms for the auction at the library's new quar- ters at the former Dallas Borough High School. ChairmandJohn Shaskas nomi- nated his friend, free-lance con- tractor Gary Foltz of Harveys Lake, for the job. Foltz's design for the platforms grew into an entire building with year-round secure storage for the antiques and auction equipment. “The first auctions had been held at Howard Risley’s barn on Lehman Ave.,” Foltz said. “In designing and building the new block, I wanted to keep that same barn-type look while providing an enclosed bidding and storage area.” Foltz donated the labor and materials for the block, which took about a year to finish. He did such a good job that he was asked to design and build the Rotary’s food booth in 1988, a permanent building housing cook- ing and food storage facilities, where the world-famous Rotary Ham ‘n Cheese on Rye and the Auction Burger are made for four Call 1-800-272 5473 Since 1925 : TE) TA wow he Back Mountain Library Auction ) J Wednesday, July 6, 1994 13 ‘Gary Foltz built the auction stage..and more POST FILE PHOTO Dave Spurlin took the bids in this photo from the 1990 auc- tion.
