A 40-year-old full-length otter fur coat in mint condition is one of the more unusual offerings this year. “A prominent Wilkes-Barre furrier once mistook it for beaver, but otter fur is a lot finer than beaver,” said chairman MaryAnn Daley, who has been hard at work accumulating and cleaning items with Bette Walters and Jack and Carolyn Johnson. Several lamps, including a hanging coach lamp and two Stif- fel lamps are sure to be excellent buys. In need of a little TLC, several old American Flyer sleds from the early 1940's, a folding child's wooden stool, lots of baskets, crocheted lace pieces and many nice linens in good condition await eager buyers. A huge blanket box with draw- ers, which can be stocked with two woolen blankets which have never been used, is also featured this year. Glassware, china and a pair of five-candle silver plated candle- abra are among the many lovely items for sale at the Nearly New booth. Organized and operated com- pletely by Boy Scouts from Dallas Troop 281, the Children's Auction is always popular with the younger set. The Scouts have been hard at work collecting new and good used toys, which they will sell across the block. The younger set can expect to find stuffed animals, posters, games, boys’ and girls’ items and gift certificates from Back Moun- tain businesses. Local author Susan Rukstalis, who wrote and illustrated How Many Steps Before the Queen, and an Irem Temple Clown will visit the grounds during the Children’s Auction. Brought back to the Back Mountain Memorial Library Auc- tion in 1990 by chairman Connie Scott, the children’s auction is a good community service project for boys ages 11 to 18 working towards Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class and Eagle Scout ranks, POST PHOTO/GRACE R.
