Dallas, PA Wednesday, May 11, 1994 -6 The Dallas Post Women's Conference registration open The annual Luzerne County Women's Conference will celebrate its 10th anniversaryJune 4 at the Penn State-Lehman campus, with .' registration beginning at 7:45 a.m. The conference will present - three keynote speakers to look at the progress of equity for women in the past decade and forecast for the future. Two keynoters at previous conferences: Dorothy Cotton, for- mer civil rights workers whose special interest now is empower- ing women in communities and Mary H. Purcell, now working in United Nations projects for women and a former president of the International Federation of Uni- versity Women. The third panelist is Mary Anne Gale, one of the highest-placed executives in the manufacturing sector in the U.S. She is site director at the Mehooopany Procter & Gamble site, largest P&G site in the world. The cost of the confernce is $17 before May 20 or $22 after that date. Persons under 20 attend at no cost, and persons over 65 have a price break of $6 off the regular fee. Scholarships are available for persons who cannot afford the fee. Lunch is $5, or persons may bring their own lunches. Child care is free to 50 children on a first-come basis. The conference brochures with registration forms are available at public libraries or by calling Penn State at 675-9240. Almost 100 women will be in- volved as participants providing workshops on more than 70 top- ics on health, on the family, busi- ness and careers, political issues, self discovery, legal concerns, etc. The conference will also feature an art exhibit by all the artists who have ever shown at the local women's conference and a per- formance by Susan Danoff, well- known New Jersey storyteller who grew up in Kingston. Library adds books illustrated by Dallas artist Two new books containing il- lustrations by Dallas artist Jean Fader are available for circulation at the Back Mountain. Memorial Library. Both books are by or about naturalist writers who have been influential in the environment , movement. Deep Woods, a collection of 10 of John Burroughs’ best essays, ~ was published in paperback form by Peregrine Smith Literary Natu- ralist series in 1990. Burroughs . is credited with establishing the nature essay as a literary genre. . Fader did the pencil sketches cof Slide Mountain, Woodchuck * Lodge and other scenes in the . Catskills which were used to il- ' lustrate the book. John Muir: Life and Work, is a . collection of essays about John ‘Muir, one of the most important figures in environmental history. . The essays explore his relation- ‘Bank gives to library community room fund . . First Eastern Bank recently presented a donation to the Back - Mountain Memorial Library for . the new Community Room. The room will be used by the . community as a regular meeting © place, while providing the library - with an attractive facility to con- . duct programs and host events of ~ interest to the community at large. The library plans to dedicate the Community Room in memory of Glenn W. Eyet, Jr., who served as a member of the library board of directors for 18 years and as . treasurer of the board for 11 years. ships with his family, religious and literary influences on his philosophy, and the development of his ideas on ecology. Fader contributed a pencil sketch to accompany an essay by Dr. Richard F. Fleck, Denver, Colorado. The book was pub- lished in 1993 by the University of New Mexico Press. Both projects were developed in collaboration with Dr. Fleck, who edited the Burroughs book and authored an essay in the Muir book. Fader resides in Dallas with her husband, Gordon. She is currently a member of the Pennsylvania En Plein Air Society, a group of local artists who paint “in the field”, and stud- ies art with Sue Hand of Dallas.
