Lower School students make six quilts for at-risk infants To the fourth grade students atWyoming Seminary Lower School, Forty Fort, a hero is someone with courage and val- ues. To them, children who have been abandoned, and those with AIDS or problems related to an addiction are also heroes because they must have the courage to face an uncertain future. To heighten awareness about AIDS and the suffering of young children, the fourth graders made ABC (At-risk Babies Crib) quilts. The non-profit organization known as Kids Making Quilts for Kids has distributed over 30,000 quilts nationwide. The students became interested in the project while studying a unit on heroes. This is also the first time that the topic of AIDs was introduced in the unit on the human body. The quilts were distributed recently at the Geisinger Wyo- ming Valley Hospital to children under the age of six who tested positive for HIV or AIDs, were abandoned at birth, or were born with an addiction to drugs or alcohol. Each of the three fourth-grade sections, under the directions of teachers Patti Summerhill, Karen Lyon and Charlotte Sours, made two quilts. The class discussed themes, and each student de- signed his or her own patches using waterproof laundry mark- ers. A group of parents volunteered to help them sew the squares together on a sewing machine, tie the squares to batting and finish hemming the quilts. Named to Ursinus Dean's List Dallas resident Patrice Shovlin was recently named to the Dean's Honor List at Ursinus College for the fall 1993 semester.
