Division 1 (continued from page 1) ning tradition and I wanted to be part of it,” said Shamus, who also visited Michigan State, Kent State and Temple before making her “I was impressed with the attitude of the players and the coaches. I'll be on a weight lifting program during the off-season and I hope to have a good chance to play as a freshman. I don't feel any pressure. I love a challenge.” According to her high school coach, UConn is getting a player who can contribute right from the Start “She is just so quick,” said Bpoki of Shamus, who scored five goals and recorded 17 assists during her senior season. “The goaches at UConn are already talking about her replacing Sinco (who graduates this year) at right wing. 1 knew during her junior - year that she could be a top Divi- sion I player. She gives you one hundred percent all of the time.” For Dershimer, the 18-year-old daughter of Gordon and Margaret Dershimer of Harveys lake, a decision to play field hockey with the girls instead of soccer with the Boys has paid huge dividends. “ “When I was in ninth grade I wanted to play on the boys’ soccer team,” said Dershimer, who plans to major in psychology at the Philadelphia school. “But a good friend of mine, Lynn Turner (another field hockey standout) convinced me to play field hockey. I'm glad I listened to her. She's really helped me a lot and she's a great friend.” Like Shamus, Dershimer is hoping to see some playing time as a freshman. “I'm going to work hard and play my best,” said Dershimer, who also considered offers from the University of Massachusetts and James Madison. “I hope to play as a freshman. I was really impressed with all the people at Temple. The head coach (Lauren Fuchs) seems very fair and down to earth. iH According to Lipski, Dershimer was more than just a player on the Black Knight team. “Gretchen has added so much to the program,” her coach said. “She was willing to help the younger players work on the basics. I've always admired her for doing that. Her stick skills are incredible and her conditioning makes her avery valuable player.” Both players were quick to give thanks to their parents, Lipski, assistant coach Sandy Boyle and Flossie Finn, who served as their junior high school coach. In fact, both fathers taped their daugh- ter's games and then made a high- light tape - a valuable tool in the recruiting process. I'm looking forward to “My parents were very suppor- tive during my recruiting period and with my decision,” said Sha- mus. “They've always been there for me. Coach Lipski and Sandy had so much to do with my suc- cess. They were always willing to stay after practice to work on something with me. (Finn) played a major part in the recruiting process. She took so much of her time to help out. She told me back in junior high that if I worked hard, I would be able to play for any college I wanted. I wanted to play for UConn, so I guess she was right.” Dershimer echoed her team- mate's sentiments. “I always dreamed of playing in college but I never really thought I could until (Finn) told me I could if I worked hard enough,” Der- shimer explained. “Jean and Sandy have been an important part of my life, past, present and future. They pushed me and motivated me. And my parents have always been great. They always supported me, no matter what I wanted to do. I love them both.” Front Wheel Alignment $9395 castrol.
