12 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, December 8, 1993 "5 One to go (continued from page 11) hopes of a possible WVC champi- onship. Now, they're playing for the state title. Incredible. Washington and Dallas have given us some classic games at the professional level. This should be one on the high school level. Washington is big and fast. They have a 1,000-yard rusher and a 1,000-yard passer, and they have a handful of Division 1 col- lege prospects. But guess what, they're hu- man. The Little Prexies have had a tough time holding onto the ball this season. They've thrown a dozen interceptions. In one game, they turned the ball over seven times. Their kicking game has been erratic. Their placekicker is an impressive 3-for-3 in field goal attempts, but has missed 14 of 36 extra points. Their offense reminds me of Wyoming Area, but with a little better quarterback, Their defense looks a lot like Dunmore, but with more size. But if the Dallas Mountaineers come ready to play, they'll win the football game. I truly believe that. The way they played against Wyoming Area, Dallas could have beaten any team in the state—at any level. The community support for the team has been tremendous dur- ing the post season. Large pa- rades have greeted the team on their return from the WA and Bermudian Springs games. Let's hope support continues for one more week. The game should be over by 8:15. After media inter- views and a quick shower, it's a 3 hour, 15 minute trip back. But this time, someone answered. The Washington High School football team has come close to making the state playoffs before, but bad luck or bad timing has stood in the way of winning the title. This season, they were deter- mined not tolet thathappen again. The number two-ranked Class AA team in the state, according to the Harrisburg Patriot News Poll, will face number one Dallas on Friday night at 6 p.m. at Mansion Park in Altoona for the Pennsylvania Class AA state championships. “We had three goals before the season began,” said Washington Montecalvo. If that name sounds familiar to avid Penn State fans, it should. Mon- tecalvo was a defensive back for the Nittany Lions from 1973-1977. “One of those goals was to win the state championship. We've been close the last two years. We've been knocking on the door.” In 1990 the Little Prexies, a member of the Three Rivers Con- ference in District 7, lost 21-20 in the final minutes to conference rival Canevin Catholic. Canevin advanced to the state final where they lost to Hanover Area in over- time. Last year, Washington was eliminated in their conference final ona controversial touchdown pass with 10 seconds remaining in the game. According to Montecalvo, game film clearly showed the re- ceiver out of bounds on the win- ning reception. The Little Prexies wanted to take matters into their own hands Stacey Suda runs well in AAU national c-C meet Dallas High School sophomore cross country standout Stacey Suda finished 70th out of ap- proximately 350 runners in the AAU Nationals held December 5 in San Antonio, Texas, Stacey qualified for the national meet by finishing 6th of 200 run- ners in the 15 to 16-year-old cate- gory at the Mid-Atlantic regional meet November 20 at West Ch- ester University. Her 9th-place finish in the district meet, despite having a 103° temperature and being bitten by a dog the previous day, qualified Stacey for regional competition. Stacey's trip to San Antonio was made possible by the gener- ous donations from the commu- nity, said her father, David Suda. - this season and, for the most part, have done just that. Washington lost just once this season, 24-6 to West Allegheny, but avenged that loss with a 17-14 win over West in the District 7 Class AA semi-final. Washington survived a scare midway through the season when they squeaked by Sto-Rox, 9-7. Sto-Rox, a perennial Class AA power in D-7, finished this season with a record of 1-9. Washington advanced to the state final with a 12-7 win over a strong Riverside (near Pittsburgh) team in the District 7 final and a 21-0 blanking of Forest Hills in the western final. They've done it with strength and speed. The Little Prexies are anything butwhat their nickname may suggest. Washington's offen- sive line averages 233 pounds while their defensive line aver- ages 240 poounds per player. But Dallas can match size with their western opponent. Dallas's four defensive linemen average 221 pounds per man while their offen- sive line averages 225 pounds per man with junior tackle Marty Straigis in the lineup. Washington has some fine skill people led by senior tailback Steve Pirris. Pirris has rushed for 1,360 yards on 181 carries (7.5 avg.) even though he missed three games due to an injury. Aaron Gatten (109-593) and fullback Joseph Evans (82-505) each have rushed for at least 500 yards this year. Senior quarterback Mike Bo- nus has completed 92-0f-179 (51 percent) passes this season for 1,189 yards and 15 touchdowns. Tight end Brian Pelkey has caught 20 passes for 278yards and seven touchdowns this season, while U-10 Girls 1st Place Cardinals Front row, from left, Erin Swepston, Julie Howell, Alison Taroli, Jessica Althoff, Courtney Colletti. Defensive end and offensive tackle Jamaal Edwards verbally committed to Penn State early in the season and Pirris (Kent State, , Ohio University), Bonus (William & Mary, Colgate), guard Rahmaire Brooks, (North Carolina, Virginia, Bowling Green) and tackle Jon- athan Miles (UVA, Ohio State, Indiana) all have colleges seeking their services after high school. - ie FV » Although his team has aver- aged nearly 305 yards per game - this season, Montecalvo knows his team faces a stern test this = Friday night. “We've told the kids that this .. will be the best defensive team we've faced all year,” said the 14- © year head coach. “Dallas plays the 4-4 defense as well as any’ high school football team I've seen in quite a while. I was very, very impressed with the way their two © down linemen (Greg Nazdan and Marty Straigis) anchored the line, the speed of their defensive ends (Steve Button and Ed Mattie) and * the hitting of their linebackers and defensive backs. Dallas has a great defensive foot- ball team.” Like the Mountaineers, Monte- calvo and the Little Prexies would like to take advantage of the op- portunity at hand. “We've come up short so many times. We may never get this opportunity again,” said Monte- calvo. “This is a once-in-a-life- time opportunity for most of the! kids. But in order to accomplish; our goal, we'll have to beat Dallas. | And they'll be the best team we've | faced all season.” \ 1 ] 1] H H] EEE TAT aT A a ah Have Your Holiday Party At GROTTO PIZZA! | Cozy Fireplace and Lakeview Setting Parties of 20 to 120 Call 639-1264 Ask For Jane!!
