Apply early for heating assistance, Mundy says Due to continuing budget cuts by the federal government, Luzerne County residents with low incomes should apply soon for winter heating assistance funds, according to state Rep. Phyllis Mundy. Mundy said the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program was cut again this year by the federal government, with the pro- i: gram experiencing a 28 percent funding drop over the last six years. “Last year, the need for LIHEAP money outran the supply of dol- lars. Many eligible families could not get assistance because Penn- sylvania’'s allocation had run out,” said Mundy. Based on the availability of funds, the LIHEAP cash grant program will run from Dec. 6 to Jan. 13 and the crisis program will operate from Jan. 14 to March 15. In other years, the program operated from November to April.
