Suzuki music students to give concerts October 24 Seventy valley students ages 4 to adult will perform in two Suzuki Concerts at the Buckingham Performing Arts Center of Wyo- ming Seminary, Sprague Avenue, Kingston, on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 2 p-m. and 4 p.m. The concerts are free and open to the public. The students study violin, viola and cello in the Suzuki method which stresses parent involvement in practice and lessons and in- cludes group classes every two weeks. This concert will feature each of the students performing a solo from memory with accompani- ment. Suzuki School For Strings di- rector Lillian T. Supplee, her daughters, Jule Supplee Sipler, Jean Supplee Brubaker and son- in-law Peter Brubaker all teach in the school and perform with the Northeastern Philharmonic Or- chestra. The Suzuki School For Strings islocated at the F.L. Peterson Arts Center on Union Street in King- ston. Folk festival October 14-17 “The Folk Art of Many Lands” will be the theme of this year's Luzerne County Folk Festival. The 18th annual celebration of this region's ethnic diversity will be held October 14th through 17th at the Kingston Armory. The festival will feature four distinct arenas: cultural heritage displays, traditional crafts and demonstrations, international entertainment, and the interna- tional food court. Committees representing over 25 nationalities have been planning this event throughout the summer and advance tickets are available. The Cultural Council of North- east Pennsylvania, founded by the late Paul H. Lauer, is the sponsor of this multicultural weekend. A full program of traditional song, music, and dance will be pre- sented throughout the four days of celebration. This year’s festival hours are: Thursday and Friday October 14th and 15th, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m.; Saturday October 16th 1:00 to 10:00 pm; and Sunday October 17th, noon to 7:00 p.m. Special programs for elementary school children are planned for Friday morning. Dr. Fields' topic, "Ode to Christianity,” will focus on the importance of appreciating Christian values and history in the Unitar- ian-Universalist religion. Clark, RR 3, Harveys Lake, recently participated in a decommissioning ceremony aboard the training aircraft carrier USS Forrestal, homeported in Pensacola, Fla. The Navy is decommissioning many older ships and replacing them with fewer but more capable ships in the fleet. Through a carefully structured plan to “right size” its force, newer, technologically superior ships will be part of the smaller Navy and Marine Corps team to operate in forward, littoral regions, from the sea.
