Bauer was a member of the crew of the HMS Investigator that, from 1801 to 1805, explored the shores and inlets of what was then a mysteri- ous new continent - Australia. The artist made thousands of drawings of natural history sub- jects that are remarkable for their extraordinary exactness and Bauer not only captures the grace and beauty of each unique plant, he literally takes us into the plant, revealing the smallest de- It was as though he had taken his cue from the .recent invention of the microscope when - he turned his artist’s eye on the wonders of this new world. This exhibition includes 21 limited edition prints reproduced from the colored drawings Bauer made of Australian plants.
