Shaffer Memorial Golf Tournament conducted Saturday at the Shadowbrook Golf Club in Tunkhannock. The women's championship went to Tunkhannock resident Kathy Goeringer who tallied a nine-over-par 81 to claim her fourth Shaffer championship. Hoover registered an error-free front nine score of 37 and was continuing that effort until the difficult par three 12th hole where adouble bogey left him two strokes over par. He soon erased that blemish with birdies on 14, 16 and 17 to record a one-under-par 34 over the back nine and his sub-par total for the champion- ship. The tournament, which hon- ors the late Harold Shaffer, an avid golfer and long time resident of Wyoming County, benefits Ty- ler Memorial Hospital located in Tunkhannock and is one of the last tournaments in which both men and women golfers compete at the same time on the same course for individual awards. Finishing eight strokes behind Hoover in the 12th annual tour- ney, which attracted more than 110 golfers, was Al Dymond Jr., who carded a 42-37-79 total. Also finishing with a 79, but losing on a match of cards, was Bill McCormick. Winning the first flight with an 86 was Charles Batman. Second and third went to Andy Kuzma and Joe Santa who both carded 87's. Second flight honors went to Charles Bartakovits who won on a match of cards over Barry Bartakovits. Both golfers shot 90. Third place went to Terry Sheckler. Jim Hawk captured the third flight, while second and third place went to John Nives and Don Gavek. Winning the fourth flight was Lee Williams who nipped runner-ups Dave Lobley and Dutch Ruble.
